YATHINNK BR build

Had to cash out a tonne of my roll to pay for Uni bills and rent and such, which meant I had a roll left over of 30 BI for the $10s and cause I've never had a BR build thread before thought I'd do one and be more than just a poster on here.

So far I've been mainly getting back into the swing of things as I hadn't played for like a month before xmas. Singletabling so I know that I'm always improving and my game will deffo be ready to stay at the 50s and 100s when I get there. Pretty confident I can go ahead and do it though.

Graph atm is swingy as i'm learning new shiz and implementing it, plus with getting back into it I've made a few bog standard errors. Roll at like 350 atm, probs move up at 500 then go from there.

I'll keep it updated regularly.
YATHINNK

So swingy to start with but putting in like 15 to 20 games a day is only so good for ironing out variance.

Most recent graph. Wanna be at the 20s by Friday at the latest really even if it means just pushing myself hard to get there. Not much else to say, hate that ROI is only like 15% but meh.
bridgegunner

looks good a bit swingy but if u feel u are getting there take a shot. sounds like u will crush it.
tmle09

looking good man keep it up!
kierkegaard1

wow, a whine about 15% roi over last 200 games...what a life!

lol!  I would be happy to have ROI 15% after 200 games, tho if he thinks he could crush the games with bigger ROI, it sucks.  Very Happy

YATHINNK: Keep up the good work and you'll be at 50's in no time.

Meh, maybe I aim too high.

Sorry I aint been around mate, my internet has been completely fudged. Think it is finally fixed now, but for some odd reason it logs me in, and I get messages, but I can't send any back. Dam you Sky Broadband!

Anyway, regarding your post.

I am going to give you some advice, it is up to you whether you use it or not. There are better (much better) players on this site than myself, that may advise different, but I am going to give you what knowledge I have , in a bid to help you out.

(1) Slow down!!!  You don't need to be beating the $100 games like yesterday. Okay you'd like to, I'd like to, life would be good, but it's unrealistic to expect to be bashing up those games with out serving your apprenticeship at the lower stakes.  I have talked with you a lot you have the basis of a decent game, but it always strikes me you are in to much of a rush with things.

I have played poker about 7 or 8 years now, without to much success. I played my first HUSNG in March last year, and I was still playing $5 games in July, despite being rolled for the $30s. I moved up to the $10s and stayed there right up until I was staked by Borg and Dom in late August. I treasured my roll, maybe a little to much, but without it , I couldn't play poker, and all said and done, I play because I enjoy it, more so that the $, although obv it wouldn't be much fun if I was losing $ all the time.

I have made probably $4k in less than a year playing HUSNG, if I had been a bit braver, I could have probably made a lot more, but then again, I could have gone broke... I am happy with how it has all gone. You should think along the same lines, concentrate on the level you are playing, forget down the line, just concentrate on each day, each game, each street, each decision. It will benefit you hugely in the long run I promise you.

wow that was a long (1)
Very Happy

(2) Less talking , more listening.  Hey don't think I am having a dig at you, we all do it, it's a forum, we wanna spout off a little, but some advice for you, and everyone else if they are interested. Know who the good players are, who will give you solid advice. I know who they are, and I reckon you do too. Listen, and listen hard to anything they might say. Write down information if it has trouble sticking, it does for me, I constantly make notes on things I think will improve me as a player. Don't waste your time giving leakfinders to other people, concentrate on you, learn from those who have done it all, and are still doing it. They beat the games for a reason, get in to their heads with every bit of information they are willing to share, it's priceless.

(3) Have a plan, with goals and milestones. I don't think the 30 buy ins and move up type thing is a bad thing, but I think setting volume goals is far better. Say you are at the $10 games now, and you think you are ready to move up, what the rush ? Play another 300 games, if you are playing 15-20 games a day, it will take you half a month or a bit more, then evaluate where you are at, the $20s will still be there , and you should be in a stronger position to attack them. Write your plan down, and stick to it, it needs to have drop down a level limits included, but moving up can wait. Forget that you are playing the $10s, you are playing poker, you are playing to win every single match, by making good decisions, by playing your A game every single time you play.

(4) Lose the unrealistic expectations. " You hate that your RIO is only 15%) Why ? That's mega, like 99.9% of the people playing $10 HUSNG's would kill for that.

my time playing $5 and $10 games looked like this

very similar win rate at both levels, I am well happy with that graph, you should be too, if you can maintain it, then your path to where you want to be, will come much quicker, but you wont get there by dreaming, you gotta work at it.

(5) Don't kid yourself. What I mean is, variance is very real, but don't kid yourself that everything is down to variance, it's not. I always knew when I was playing badly, I knew it in my soul, and I would do things to get out of that hole. I have suffered variance as much as the next man, but I have never ever kidded myself when I have been doing dumb stuff, and palming it off as variance. Take a close look at things, get others to look for you. Do what ever it takes, even take a break. You have to accept there will be rough times, limit the damage in those times, and enjoy the good times when they are there, and cream them for every single $ you can.

(6) Be happy, enjoy playing, this is the most important part of all. I simply can not play well if I am not happy when I am playing. I need to want to be playing. I had a real rough time when I was doing my Stake, it got me down real bad, maybe I don't have the mental strength to make it where I would like to be, but it doesn't mean you can't. Enjoy the game for what it is, not for what you can make out of it, and it will benefit you a tonne. If you can LOL @ your flopped set getting outdraw by a runner runner baby flush, you will be better for it.

I hope you don't think I am having a go at you, I am writing this, cos I like you (not in a gay way) I know you really want to go far in poker, and those are just a few things which may help you. As I said, there are far better players than me on here, ask them for advice too, and listen to what they have to say carefully.

Good Luck

Wow, thats probably the best thing of this site I've ever read.

Even if some of the things make me feel like a proper jackass. Hit me up on Skype mate when you're on its been ages.

Thanks a lot for your advice, I've copy pasted it, as weird as you may see that, but tbh it summarises everything.

I'm really impatient with a lot of stuff, and I guess its just a case of if I think I can do it then I go and do it. Like I say, maybe I am aiming too high.

Either way, thanks for the advice man. Really appreciate it.

Great post Blazing.

That looked like it was meant to me also, and made me think.
YATHINNK

Shifted up to the 20s with the help of aggsy. So far so good, hit a few swingy spots but nothing major to worry about. Just a quick update as not a lot has happened but I'm making it a habit to keep this thread updated.

Graph atm:
YATHINNK

Haven't updated this for a while.

Managing to play games here and there but i'm struggling to get in solid sessions tbf with other commitments and shiz.

Looks like that so far. Its real swingy but I don't know if thats just cause of the fact theres a mix of 10 and 20s in there, idk, ROI is like 10%ish which does me fine. I think I'd perform better if I managed to sit down and really concentrate but at the moment its on the up which is fine by me.

Probably just shot take the 30s soon, hopefully shouldn't have to move down but its all coming together slowly but surely

Haha, wow Razz your approach is like the opposite to mine. I think Blazing has said everything I would in his megapost, but just to reiterate, there really is no rush. If I were you I'd be super grateful I was beating the $10s, and would spend some time there to make sure that my game was fully up to scratch (I would've done that before reaching the $10s to be honest - you're a brave guy starting out there!)

Good luck Smile , if you keep up at this rate you'll be playing NL40k HU with Ivey next week Razz .

I was about to say, I would work on your game now rather then later, as you will lose less money this way, this is coming from experience by the way Smile

:O, I did actually read it. But I'm still super impatient, it's almost wired into me I think.

Tell you what, I'll actually slow it right down and see if i can build a roll before moving up anymore, what figure did you hit before you moved up Mark?
YATHINNK

Ok I have an educated guess at what it was now so don't worry. You have solid patience. Maybe its cause i'm probs the youngest here idk. I just really do have little to no patience, something I should work on but I really have no idea how.

Chill out man, I am only trying to help you. It's not about x amount of $. It's about being comfortable winning and losing for that matter at poker. You don't want to follow the bankroll guidelines I used, cos they were ridiculously nitty.

give yourself a set amount of games to play, at the $20s if thats what you are playing. No less than 200 games, then assess where you are at. If you are winning easy enough then 10% or more, then go for the $30s, they will still be there.

I never played the $30s before Broker and Borg staked me, and I had a $1500 roll then. I would say you need $1k at least to give them a proper go. Taking shots is ok if you are crushing the level below, if your not, don't expect to move up and find it any easier, cos it wont be.
YATHINNK

Yeah, cool. It's just a blag not going exactly where I wanna is all. I don't expect to crush my way to the very top and theres still a tonne of work to go into it. Probs just stick around at the 20s for a bit then. Will post another update after like 50 games, maybe. Probably a bit more cause I forget that I even have this running sometimes LOL.
icemanv6

If it helps I used 27.5-30BI, and now i'm going to be using more when I go upto the 80s.

You can also play the 20s like, play 8x 20s, then 2x 30s, etc so you just dabble into them, then 7x20s and 3x30s etc if you get what I mean until your comfortably into them.

Personally if you have 30BIs for the 30s and you are, as blazing said crushing the level below you might as well move up, but if your not exactly as he said the game's won't be any easier.

Well do it then. I don't want you thinking I am being harsh on you. Well I probably am, but that's cos I want you to succeed. It wont happen overnight, and it wont happen at all, if you don't start listening to what people say to you. People who have done it, and are still doing it. I don't mean me, ignore me if you like. Talk to Borg, BrokerStar, Red_Dog, Kierk, etc etc. I don't mean stalk them, but I am sure if you have questions they will answer if they have the time.

Do your study, review your games, watch videos, and not just watch them, take something from them. Post hands on the forum, even if you think you played them like a donk, so what, I don't mind being laughed at, if it stops me making the same mistakes again. Strive every day, to be better than the day before, and it will come I promise.

I like you (again, not in a gay way) Your a local lad, and we have chatted loads on skype. I don't spend much time on there now, and I haven't had as much time to help you, I'm sorry about that, it's just life is pretty full right now, but I will go through some stuff with you. There are better players than me on here that can help you though too.

If you want it, make it happen. Make a plan, a serious plan, with goals that are hard, but achievable. Give yourself rewards for achieving them. Long term goals take a long time, you need milestones along the way, to make the journey seem less tedious.

Good luck mate, you can do it.

Definitely agree, I appreciate the time he's put into me tbh. I'll definitely make sure I get to where I wanna be, but you're totally right that I need to slow it down and make sure everything is solid before I rush into things.

Well just look at it this way. You're beating the $21s for a 15% ROI, that's $3.15 you're making per game on average. If you play an average of 8 games per hour (seems standard for 2 tabling), then including 27% rakeback, you're making $27.36/hour. That's about £17/hour. Do you know how many people who have been working for 20 years would kill to be on £17/hour? My dad has been software engineer for 30 years and doesn't get that. Nor does my mum working as a photographer and a teacher.

You're one of the lucky ones Smile just be grateful for what you have and what you can currently achieve. You're young, you have your whole life ahead of you. If I was earning $7/hour at poker I'd be pretty damn thrilled, never mind $27/hour, haha.

I guess my point is, sometimes it's easy to be so determined and impatient to make things better, that we forget how good we have it even right now. You probably think I'm one of those hippie types by saying this, but just take a few moments each day to be grateful for the present, and cherish your current skills and what you currently achieve. The past is history, and the future is a million miles away Smile . Never belittle how lucky you are - even if you never were able to move up from the $20s, you have it better than so many other people: not just poker players, but a very high number of people in other professions too.

Good luck Smile .

Played an interesting match against YATHINNK last night, so checked out your bankroll thread. Given your playing style I am not overly suprised at the swings you have been facing. Lets merge those hand histories on Skype tonight and drill down into some detail. Il be on from about 6 onwards.

Yeah I play pretty high variance a tonne of the time. Fine tuning would probs change it but meh, it works.
YATHINNK

It's pretty steady and swingy cause I'm learning a lot as I go along still and trying different stuff.

10% ROI overall, rolled to play the 30s but probs gonna stick at the 20s for a bit until I can make the decent transition through to the higher stakes.

YATHINNK

Yeah I'm starting to nail down a game of my own now, so i'm noticing that my results are becoming a lot less swingy. Before I found that I would often lose my focus sort of and as I didn't have any fundamentals down I'd throw the game away.

Yeah, when I'm on Skype I normally just leave it on and then talk to whoever talks to me, so don't take it personally if I haven't hit you up recently haha.
YATHINNK

Ain't really got a graph to post cause I've been playing on Stars to grind out a bonus. I blocked my graph to try and build on what was a useless looking one and I don't wanna unblock yet.

asof April I've managed to make the transition to the 50s, albeit I keep dropping down should I lose a few, and keep a steady roll between 1.6-1.8, it fluctuates quite a bit but I guess thats through playing with bigger numbers.

Don't really have a plan from here tbh as I've finished uni so summer is literally just going to be about having fun for me. I'd like to think I'd be able to grind out enough to be at the hundos by xmas but I don't know how plausible that is.

So far all I've done is try and buckle down and learn a lot. I haven't played much at all really, managed a few and ran pretty breakeven at them but I feel like I'm learning a lot.

From here on in I'll probably be learning more and playing the 50s rather than playing the 30s I am and not sticking in much time to watching vids.

Could do with a few people to sweat/talk to and I don't know who I have here and who I don't so go ahead and add me on Skype, it's:
