I have picked up the poker bug again.

And decided that this time I want to go more slowly and instead of having a few lucky wins trying to move up the stakes ...

I was wondering what most would keep by the side.

eg. If I was to play 50c-1 what would be a well thought out bankroll to take the ups and downs?

You are going to have to adjust your bankroll for cash games and I cannot help you with that as I don't play cash myself but I think that 50c-$1 is pretty big stakes for a beginner.
Not sure though..
