Above_Courtesy of one of our best players......
Side thought:
There is no difference in quality of player between the $1s-5s
After the $10s and up things get a little harder but since you should have so much more experience the level of difficultly doesnt appear to change very dramatically because you've already learned so much since starting.
Its better to be strict and patient wih yourself and stick to the lower buy in levels to test yourself than to push up to limits your not ready for. After this phase you can ask the same question again when your ready. Some people have different goals backgrounds in poker and characters. So think of different bank roll plans and think of one that you would like to do. As times goes by you may need to adjust the plan a little.
I had no experience in poker and spent 2 months at the $1 games and a further 2 months at the $2 games. Then I spent 2 months at the $5-10 games and a further 2 months at the $20-$30 games. I have now moved up to the $50 games
Some people move up faster and most never make it past the $20s. After all that time I hope to have achieved solid foundation and feel as though I paid my dues and I now move up when I feel like it.....
I cannot emphasize that I did indeed spend a solid 4 months at the $1s and $2s. Your number one priority is skill and experience, not money (BR). Once the skill and experience is in place moving up gets quicker and quicker. I cannot emphasize the patience enough. In this game you can make a solid source of income after 8-12 months. If you push too hard and pull it off too quickly there are usually consequences. Usually burn out and cracks in your fundamentals. Again this is not the case for everybody as I know of a few players that seem to make it far faster than others, but for the majority this doesn't happen if at all.
IF your mindset is based on top quality poker, learning consistently and building on the fundamental course slowly...then when all the keys are in place (basic keys) the money does indeed literally just roll in.
This message will begin to make sense at around 750 games and truly make sense at 2000 games...=) (ball park ok!)
When your struggling and your failing which will happen you must be able to pick yourself up and dust yourself off and try again and again and again and again until you push through to the next wall!
Even when you make it past the low stakes all the way up to the highest you will always have this test. Even our best players like kierkgaard who has won over 100k had the exact same feeling and challenge you will go through at the micro stakes only a few months ago. Your not on your own in that respect!
I wish you the best of luck!

p.s One of the best sources of education is read all of the bankroll threads in your spare time. I would read the top team threads over and over. I would see what they learned, how they failed, why they failed, why they succeeded and see what I could learn. I looked through the best Br threads and used those to motivate me to be the best. I looked through the mediocre threads to see what the difference was between the top players and the ok players. I even looked through the two week threads to understand the mentality behind wishful thinking, why they didnt finish and how I could avoid such a mistake so I didnt fade out into an empty promise...
I scoured every single strategy blog and picked the most influential articles and answers and condensed them into notes and compiled a small book of notes in addition to the fundamentals. I would go over these notes over and over and over.......
There is more.......but I think this is enough to paint a picture....again this was all done slowly but consistently over a long period of time with good breaks days off, holidays and even a really long 12 day rest to avoid burning out....there is no rush, just move swiftly!!!!

great post and you are 100% right there aint no point rushing to higher stakes if you aint going to be profitable there because youl just end up back at the low stakes
and il look through those bankroll threads you mentioned(also checking out some the videos on the site aswell)

Man if you're starting out at the lowest stake with XX replenishable dollars don't worry too much about it. If you have YY bankrol and ask what game you should play having 50 ish buyins for each stake isn't a bad idea.
Just dont overdo it and say like "oh i got $100 so i can't play $5" of course you can play $5 or even $10 assuming that you can redeposit your hundo.
BRM talks not only about the balance in your poker account but your set-aside poker money, no need to make it more complicated that neccesary when starting out

great post z not much i can add aprt from to mention this,
Alot of people struggle up thought the stakes (me included) because they concerred abuot there money. Many people come with there $100 and want to make it top the big time and follow in the foot steps of the big players, what people forget is the amount of mental strain they are putting them selves under as they know they can't reload if it all goes wrong!
This pressure they have to get it right first time combinded with playing with sggressive bankrolls means that they struggle to play well as they lose a couple games in a row and then panic about lossing alot of there roll, this in turn makes them loose more as they are more worried about the money they may loose on this game rather than winning the game they are playing!
My point is that playing a limit where you don't mind if you lose 10 games in a row is more likly get you better faster and i turn get you up the stakes fater
best of luck

Ha Ha, I'm not one of the best players.
Seriously though, it really depends alot on your ability, and your desire to move up.
30 buyins is a decent guide, moving down after a 10 buyin shot. However as said above, 50 is better in many ways, especially if you are only beating the games by a little bit, if you are crushing the level you are playing, then there is little point hanging around and waiting for 50 buyins, move up and take a shot at the next level, see how you get on, and move down a bit sharpish if it's going wrong.
