The legalty of online poker

Is it still illegal to play online poker in the United States? What about other countries? , if most of you income is from online poker (while playing in the states) how are you supposed to claim your winnings, and how are people able to deposit online?

I believe it's illegal in some states, but I think in general it's a somewhat murky area and there's constant pressure from pros trying to get it changed. I know that some poker sites don't accept US players. In most countries it's legal I should think.

I'm lucky living in the UK, as it's completely legal here and I don't have to worry about tax.

From what I know about it:

1. It's not illegal to play poker online in the States, as long as the servers are in a state where gambling is allowed (i.e. Vegas). It's a technicality, but it's the way it is. The one exception is the State of New Jersey and the city of Washington that introduced rectifying bills that prevents gambling in the basis of where the gambler physically is, not where the gambling takes place.

2. As far as I know there aren't many countries that have legislation pertaining online gambling. The States has it as I mentioned previously, Cuba does not allow any type of gambling and the same goes for North-Korea and China, although China as an exception, Macau, due the particular history of the city (it was a Portuguese colony until 2000/2001) and the lenient tendency that the "new" regime has been taking.

3. Brazil has been the first country to actually legalize online poker, stating that "it is not a game of chance, but a game of skill". In Portugal, Spain, in the States and probably other countries bills have been created and introduced in order to legalize and regulate it, but so far have fallen short.

4. Not being legislated does not mean it's illegal, it just means that no juridic device has been placed.

5. In some countries (like Sweden and Finland) you do need to declare your online gains, not because there's a specific law, but because all forms of income need to be declared and accounted for.

There maybe other situations/exceptions/cases, but these are the one's I know for sure.

Hope it helped.

Take care.

If online poker becomes legalized in major countries... fish galore. Any bills trying to be passed in the US as of now?

Harry Reid (US senator from Nevada) had a bill fail about two months ago that would have opened up online poker to US based casinos. The fallout of the bill failing is summarized by Ftrain here -> http://ftrain.blogspot.com/2010/12/whats-next-for-us-online-poker.html

The latest US poker legislation was just vetoed by New Jersey's governor. If I understand it correctly it would have legalized online poker sites allowing residents of New Jersey to play against each other, but not with people from other states/countries. I'm pretty sure this would have required FT, PS, and other foreign based sites to leave NJ as well. Similar "intrastate" bills are in the works in Florida, California, and Iowa. It will be interesting to see what happens, but if online poker (and depositing methods) are changed for the better in the US there's going to be a ton of new fish.

Try buying liquor after 7pm anywhere but a bar/restaurant... wtf where do you get your beer in Canada?

in B.C. you can only get booze in a government liquor store, or a cold beer and wine store, which close at 9pm or 11pm.... and the liqour stores close early on weekends and are not open on sundays.

are you saying i cant go to the gas station in Blaine, washington and buy a case of beer after 7pm?... cause im pretty sure I have....

Ouch, should have guessed the government would be involved. Didn't seem to be slowing anyone down last time I was in canada though. I was talking about liquor you can get beer just about anywhere in the states.
