The Future of Online Poker

I came across this article today, it is nothing definitive, just someone elses opinion, in article form.

I happened to agree with the majority of it, it may not be what people who aspire to play poker for a living want to hear, but I think there is a lot of truth in it.

good article.
i also agree with the most of it.

i play on pokerstars for about 3 years now and even the low stakes are becoming harder to beat. actually not harder but less easy.
i play mainly in the 7$ and 15$ reg speed HUSNGs. and it really becoming rare to find total stations or complete maniacs in these stakes.
almost everyone has learned the TAG style. almost everyone knows to play aggresively in position and cautiously OOP. most of these "TAGs" are really just TAGfish but its still minimizes your bottom line when you are playing against a competition who knows at least the power of position.

i think that people who dont eat, drink and breathe poker but still are looking to make good income out of the game, must use a thing i like to call "poker room selection". its exactly like table selection but instead of searching for the fishiest tables, you search for the fishiest poker rooms.

i would have left pokerstars a long time ago and look to play in a more fishy poker room if it wasnt for my stupid country who decided that poker is illegal in all form and thus making life mega-hard to deposit money  Mad .
we dont have even one casino in israel so going live is also not an option.
but people who do have an option must use it to its full degree if they are serious about making income out of poker.

umm i disagree with that article tbh! in the year and a half i've been playing poker i've never seen a massive change in the player pool and all the medicore players it talks about getting better i just don't see it. with all the information available to them they really shouldn't stay medicore for very long anyway, but they do and so often they give up and quit with out progressing. I'd agree that the top 5% are probably getting alot better and stretching ahead of the field but that still leaves a good 25% of good solid regs mopping up the fish in the field and making money. Also the game isn't solved so if your in a tough game with good regs, get better! Learn what there small mistakes are and punish them for it and if your able to do that suddenly those players in the top 5% don't look that threatening!

Disagree completely.

15 Months ago, I was a 20% Winner at the $30s, now I think I am probably like an 8% winner at the $15s -$10s w/e. The games are no where near as fishy as they once were. Still beatable for sure, but how much you gonna make being a 5% winner at the $30s ? Can probably force a poor living out of it I guess, but with inflation, wont be that many years before it's not enough.

I started playing 6 max at the $10s recentely, last time I played (2 years ago) tonnes of tables with players seeing flop 30-40%, now you are lucky if you find one with 15% +  You wanna beat $100 NL and above, you gotta put some serious work in.

It's not the top 5% you want to worry about, it's easy to avoid them, it's the rest of the field not being anywhere near as bad as they were.  Still plenty of fish about at the micros, but not as fishy as they once were.

Doesn't matter that much, to most people, who basically make a few $£ from a hobby they enjoy, like I do, but to actually make a living, it's very , very tough, in my opinion that is.

chatting to some reg on pokerstars the other day. Was a really nice chat for once. Instead of the usual abuse. Actually im sometimes just as bad as everyone else and called him a load of stuff in the chatbox and he offered to load up another couple of tables against me. I said i didnt really want to and ended up apologising lol and so we got chatting. His avatar pic was of a bundle of notes. Back in the partypoker days he said this was how much he withdrew which was $150, 000 when he cashed out and was playing $300 dollar games then. Anyway long story short he now only plays the $30 and $60 games and can only breakeven nowadays and has been doing for the last year or two. Said the games are much much harder now...

Not sure i totally agree about the games being really hard from my perspective as i've only been playing HU since Xmas. One thing i do think has had a big impact on HU is hyper turbos. Maybe a lot of the fish are playing hypers?

Definitely lost some fish to the hypers. All the high stakes ballers play those too, to basically take home the rakeback/bonuses.

Back in those party poker days, making $ was easy, I hardly knew the rules, and I was a winner at 9 man sng's  Laughing
