The 29-day challenge!

Hey guys

As you know I ended my bankroll building thread after about 20 days of solid grinding on the merge network. When I say solid, I don't mean very solid as I only managed an average of 20.4 games per day.

I recently met a poker player who makes his entire living from rakeback, and although I don't feel like becoming a rakebackpro I still want to issue myself a volume challenge that was achievable but not impossible.

I've found a euro site that offers a 200% sign up bonus upto $2,000 and then the site has a VIP-club that should give me just shy of $1,000 if I manage to release my bonus. On top of that I should cash in 3 different rake races that contribute a bit of rake back.

Of course this is not going to be easy. To fulfil the requirements I need to rake $3,200 in 29 days (thats when the bonus expires) if I do not make $3,200 in 29 days I lose the ENTIRE $2,000 bonus and the entire project is wasted.

To not kill myself before the 29 days are up I obviously need to be playing turbos, Ongame has 3 minute levels and will therefore play a tad bit faster than FTP who's running 4 minute levels.  Ongame thankfully has 10% rake on HUSNGs so I "just" need to play 1,600 $22 turbos in the 29 days or 56 per day. If everything is done right I will be standing in the end with the following:

$2,000 Bonus paid out
$889 in VIP-Club bonus
$300 estimated in private rakerace
$200 estimated in 2 site rake races
------------------------------------------
Total: $3,389 return for $3,200 raked

Wish me luck, it's going to be a serious grind and I don't expect to be a 10%+ roi winner :O)

Good luck Chris - You can do it !!

I tried a rake race once playing loads of 50sngs then after a few days realised it was for cash games only - not saying this is the case for you, just I am dumb and never bother with small print.

Nice projected earnings! GL with the volume.

gl, profits are always the best motivator Smile. Are you going to multi-table? I have a hard time seeing you doing this without it, cause if your average game time is a little over 10mins that's about 10 hours a day. Also, we should actually do a sweat session or hand history review sometime instead of just talking about it lol.
ChrisB

So the first update sucks, pretty much. I played 10 tables of heads up and managed to bust my $1000 roll when I went on tilt and moved up in limits trying to chase losses.

------ JUST KIDDING -----

Actually I haven't started yet because I had to wait for my funds to be released from my old poker site, and the new poker site is giving me a ton of shit about verification and transfer limits (lol)

Anyway, I really hope to start this VERY soon.

Warm-up day over, project renamed to the 20-day project starting tomorrow!

So I finally got everything set up to begin my climb towards the grinder mountain. I got set around 8PM so I figured today would be a kind of warm-up day where I would get familiar with the software and its players at the $20 level. I got in 20 games which is like 80 below avg for when I begin seriously tomorrow.

Let me tell you the players are really bad so far, some are ridiculously tight and just wait around for a great hand (which isn't a great idea in turbo heads up)

I ran into some sick setups but ran fairly well in the all-ins, I won exactly as many games as I lost but due to the rake I ended the day -$40 on my $1,000 starting roll. No matter, turbos have variance and at least I didnt lose more matches than I won.

I'm changing the nature of the challenge slightly as Betsafe has changed their big bonus structure to yield only 50% from 62.50 which is obviously a considerable nerf to my project, but I still feel that the overall value with the PokerNet.dk race and 2 other races+VIP bonus and the signup bonus will yield a pretty good result. They changed the requirement to $4,000 raked which means that I need to rake $800 more which I of course will be given more VIP bonus for.

I also decided that I was going to make a run for it to get it finished by April 30th. At least the bonus bit, this will give me a good finishing position in the rake races and allow me to clear my head in time to begin the may grind.

Now I'm going to watch an endgame vid from Mersennary, as I feel like my endgame has been a bit random thus far.

Wow, what a day. I started out going about 15 buyins in the hole by tilting and running incredbly bad and by the end of it I had grinded most back by winning 13 of my last 15 games.

I made my volume goal, 100 heads up sngs & $200 raked in just shy of 7 hours played. Now I feel physically exhausted!

I'm not sure I can go 20 days like this, but it would be nice to do so anyway Smile

Stats:
Games: 100
ROI: -3.6%
Result: -$80
Rake: $200 (5%)

Just read the blog of Mr _Orty_ and got some great inspiration, what a grinder! Smile

Day 2:

Cliffs:
Exhausted
Loads of games
Still stuck
ahead of pace, slightly

Stats:
237 Played
Rake: $474 (+74 from pace)
Result: -$134

Obv not super to be stuck what amounts to just shy of 7 buyins, but with 3 minute turbo structure I'm sure the sickest swings are possible Smile

Tomorrow will be a tough task to continue to put this much volume in, I'm going for a game of badminton early in the morning and I hope to get back soon to continue the grind.

Assuming 100% rakeback, which isn't too far off im up something like $350 so far.

Interesting topic, but i am not fun of "catching" RB and playing massive volume. I like more your "sky is the limit project". Very nice progress in a short time  Cool However, whish you a luck in this challenge!  Smile

gl fella, just remember to try and keep mentally focused which is the hardest part when grinding alot of volume.

hope u smash it

Thanks mate, yeah I too personally am not a huge fan of "grind just to reach $XX in rake" but after slacking way too much and only playing like 2 hours per day, I figured something drastic had to happen and I felt like it helps me a lot to have a fixed goal to reach rather than just "play a lot more" After these 20 days (18 days to go!) I might just create a new thread where I play the reg speeds again focusing only on ROI, but I'm not sure, the turbos have a lot of action which I love! Smile

Thanks! Yeah I've had to cut from 3 tables to 2 permanently now as I was just pissing away money 3tabling for 6 hours in a row. This will mean that I have to play something like 8 hours per day, but the corresponding ROI gain should be significant enough to be worth it....and besides 8 hours is a normal job right? I just get to sit at home and take it in my tempo, make an obscene hourly because of rakeback and I'm my own boss, oh and no taxes either Very Happy

Edit: Only thing I hate is that I have pretty much no time to write on tagpoker anymore Sad

I hear you. I wanna piece of that one day. Swap my office for a poker table. You are one of the privileged few (in my eyes) Laughing

Keep it going Chris you can do it. Will look you up for a game review after your grind.

Cheers and Good luck!!

Hah, I wish you were around to tell me that today when I couldn't win at all Smile

Anyway, day 3 I managed only 90 games which is 10 games under pace. Luckily I played 17 OVER pace yesterday, which leaves me 27 games ahead of pace going into day 4.

It's really tough to just keep playing and playing when you face tilt, suckouts and just in general bad play. I know I'm capable of winning at the limit but I just seem to fuck it up for myself by making silly stack offs really deep or bad calls etc etc. I lost for the third day running today, but I at least played much better - I felt like. I definitely ran bad in All-ins today, and ran some of my <10bb jams into big hands way too often.

There were 2 sick matches. One where I lose AK < AQ ai preflop in the 2nd hand and survive with 20 chips, only to fight back and win the next 7 all ins in a row in the match (not straight after eachother)

I was owned back when I get a guy down to 3-5bb and run my J8s or something similar into Ax that holds up, now get this...in the next 5 minutes that happened another 6! times where I got it in with 40-55% equity and lost ALL 6, he picked up Ax 6 fucking times in such a short timespan and then managed to not lose...ever.

So I raked $180 today and lost $100 which puts my daily profit at around $80 - not too shabby, although would like to see some green numbers around soon.

Games: 327
Winrate: 53.2%
Profit: -$234
Rake: $654

I'm stuck just about 10.5 buyins which is obviously UNCOOL, but in 3minute turbos I'm sure its as normal as anything. I'm raking about $25 per hour (90-100% rb depending on race finishes) so even though I have lost $9/hr in the games so far I'm still winning anywhere between $10-$16 per hour just playing $20+2 hu sng - oh yeah, and the rake is fucking sick! Very Happy

PS: Pretty sick that I've won 53.2% of my games this month and I'm still stuck over 10 buyins...damn rake

Stats after day 7:

Games: 607
ROI: -3.8
Rake paid: $1,214 + a bit of cash, but not significant.

This means that I'm 93 games behind pace for my april 30th finish and obv will require me to grind slightly more. I'm working on improving every day and plugging a lot of leaks like stacking off way too light and getting in middling pairs in spots where it makes no sense (either flipping or way behind) against villains I can easily outplay.

Some other leaks included playing a bit too many hands OOP and overplaying marginal hands as pfr. I really think I have improved the last 100 or so games, but now I just need the final bit of rungood. I still have 1,393 games to go!

Smile
ChrisB

I failed. A bankroll of 60+ buyins was simply not sufficient for me to play properly and I failed to move down in time.

I'm disappointed in myself the most.
U Cook Socks

Sorry to hear that mate. Chin up, your still a good player, with a good future ahead of you, if you want it.
Wannawin

sorry to hear that mate.

stock take, and set your next goal(s)

move on.
ChrisB

Alright

April is done and even though I didn't quite manage to finish the original project I did manage to make a pretty good income anyway.

The numbers are as follows:

VIP Bonus: +$726
Bonus: +$1,307
Rakeraces: +$550

I lost about $300 in the games so my profit for the month comes to about +$2,283

Not too bad, anyway, an hourly of $24.50 tax free!
