table talk, player images etc...Hello everyone! I just thought that this topic is worth a discussion. While there are much less "tells" in online than live, the "table talk" can be as important, especially at the lower levels. For example when someone tells me that poker is rigged I will know he is a fish and is more likely to make bad calls or bluff in bad/obvious spots.
While I strongly believe, that insulting an opponent to put him off is anacceptable behaviour, it is still interesting how you can gather information and/or "sell" information to your opponent.
I had some experience saying things like "call:)" or "fold:)" and (probably) influencing my opponent's decision in some way. Of course this must be used in conjunction with the imeediate hand history and your opponent's perception. If you have been raising a lot recently and get aces, it helps to make your opponent think, that youa re on tilt, so you get called lighter or even get a reraise from a weaker hand.
I know, that table talk is used widly in live tournaments (Negreanu is apparently very good at that), yet it should be of even greater importance online due to lack of other ways to gather additional information.
I am a beginner, would like to hear from more experienced players on this topic.

yeah... I am also interested how people see player images. I have seen pictures of fish or donkeys:). Some have sharks, but that is more rare. People ultimately want to sell wekness, so that their opponents play softer against them.
Any thoughts on that as well?

So far I've had people suddenly be friendly to me when I'm deciding to call/fold.
I've had one guy type: So let's be buddies? What do you drink? etc... And another change his avatar to smile (on fulltilt) etc. I've concluded that in such cases the majority of the time they want you to call.
I've also had times when playing sngs where people were berating each other. And one of them basically just tells the whole table how he plays.... It's not a bad move to pretend to be dumb sometimes, particularly at the lower stakes.
Personally I almost never type/respond to anything in chat.

I just played with someone having a really sexy picture of Charlize Theron. Told him, that this picture is +1% to his ROI. While a jopke this might well be true. I was thinking of that picture and my brain definately did not work as well as usually.

Funny enough, I found out about Tagpoker.com while chatting with someone playing 15$HUSNG at PS:). Some people are really friendly, and it can be of some value to discuss a hand that you just played with you opponent.

I have a skype friend that I meet through a $5 game.
We chat poker every now and then.
I tend to be friendly to people when I see that they have a rough idea of the game.
I say my opinion over a hand we played or just write something like "well played" when I think he made a good play.
This makes the opponent play more honestly against you.
It also could have some learning value if your opponent starts chatting back and could point out a good/bad play you made.
Lastly it might give you a feel on a hand when someone starts to get chatty and then shuts up on a hand..
I don't do it that much since there are few decent players at the $5 but I think that the disadvantage of maybe giving away how you play or things like that shouldn't bother you in micro-low levels.

I have a hard time not telling people with pictures of themselves as an avatar, that they are ugly, or look gay.
In general I don't chat at all now, just turn it off. It is just to tilting.

i really dont say anything anymore, id rather not say nh or well played as it gives them more confidence and just makes them feel good. if someone starts berating me i usually say ty or ok, it gets them soo tilted.

lmao.
If I'm ever playing Pokerstars I'll be sure to put up a picture of myself as an avatar.
Once I had an interesting bit of tabletalk. I had AKs of hearts, board came something like 884. Paired and I had a FD. He bet, I called. A came down. Then he paused and said "Let me guess...hearts?" and he bet again and I called. I missed my FD and he bet pretty damn big.
I'm still wondering what he had there. I folded river because it really looked like he had a FH or trips and was trying to get me to spew with an A. Or maybe he had jack shit all and said that exactly to make me fold. Either way, it affected my decision.
