Prop bet - $1000 by the end of 2011

Last night, I made a prop bet with someone calling me a fish (helllloooooooooo ego) that I can make $1000 from HUSNG's by the end of the year. I'm unusually confident since I'm a breakeven player over a 1k game sample, but I think if I apply myself correctly I can achieve my goal.

I've bet $200 at even odds, which doesn't sound like much but is 1/5th of the amount I have to win so it's a fair chunk relative to the bet.

Starting roll: $114

BRM:
I will be using 30buy in BRM until the $15's for turbos, and 25bi's for reg speeds.

Goals:
For the remainder of the year, my goals are:
[] $1000 profit from 12th July-31st December
[] Regular study
[] 2000 HUSNG's
[] Update this thread on the last day of each month with my results and next months goals

If any of you guys want to help me out with some HH reviews or generally talk poker, feel free to add me on skype (SN: wannabb4ller).

Get behind me guys, support me, and help me win this thing!

gl, easily attainable if you focus.

It's not that easy, if it was, everyone would be doing it  Very Happy

Good luck though, I'm sure you can do it.
Jakester1288

Hmm, weird. My time at the tables hasn't been spent focused on the game, rather more focused on this bet. I need to stop this from affecting my game, somehow.

I've also moved back to reg speeds, playing extremely poorly, will post my graph up to hold myself accountable.

Need to concentrate a lot more on my game and not think about the money involved, and start crushing!

I could if I was rolled for it and wanted to face the variance. I'm happy just grinding out 2 mans ATM.

Yes best of luck mate!!!

Remember to take your time, think what your opponent is doing most often (calling too much, folding too much, being a loon etc etc) then play so that they dig their own grave..   Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil
Jakester1288

Ok guys, just made up my schedule. This is a LOT of hours for me, but if I stick to this, hopefully in about 2 months I can cut back working Sundays, then drop off Saturdays as well and play poker for a living through the rest of school.

EDIT: It's not exactly this now (shower in morning = moar time for pokerz), and it's going to be constantly changing when I find HH review partners etc, but this is more or less what it's going to be.
U Cook Socks

Yes, giving up on personal hygiene, so that you can get better at poker, seems acceptable.

i'll be following this, good luck!
Jakester1288

I've decided to make this grind more pleasurable by upgrading, bought a nice new comfy chair, I've also recently bought a 23" widescreen monitor (will be waaaayy better for studying, will actually get stuff up side by side without cramming, and eventually useful for 2 tabling if I end up doing that).

My bad run hasn't turned around yet, but I'm confident with the volume (really lacking) and study I can turn it around. I checked out the HUSNG.com variance calculator and realised this sort of swing (10-15bi) is super possible, even with a 56% winrate (which I know I can do better than). I've completely changed my schedule basically, but it's got me playing poker for 16 hours a week, so about 14 hours playtime in total with small breaks between games (which eventually, hopefully I'll be able to play 2-3 hour sessions without breaks, but that's a loooooonnnnnnnggggggg way off.
Brokerstar

I'm rooting for you man. I think making your playing conditions as optimal as possible are key for playing your best game!! (I'm so happy they finally have Wifi in my local pub  Rolling Eyes  )

Best of luck mate.

Im happy to help you with your goal if you want some advice from someone who has grinded up before. I can probably help in a few areas of your game and help you cut down on any regular mistakes you make. Ill add you on skype when I get back in.
Jakester1288

Ok, new computer arrived and set up w/ 23" widescreen monitor, new chair, new carpet etc, lets grinnddd.

Going to be keeping regular updates in this thread, once a week, with my next weeks goals, and previous weeks progress, as well as monthly updates with results.

August 15-21 goals
[] Complete history assessment task
[] Gym 2x
[] 100 pushups workout 3x
[] Log ALL food eaten, with calorie counts
[] 80 $3.50 reg speeds
[] reg speeds ONLY
[] no 2 tabling different opponents unless you have prior reads
[] post 2+ hands
[] comment on 20+ hands
[] watch 2 videos

If I can achieve this with a 12% roi, I'll be moving to the $7's on the 22nd. Weee.
z1s6arn

Mate those goals sound balla!

Gl ok!

Good luck mate

good to play you
hope we get to finish off the 10 games
Jakester1288

GL to you too, you're up 2-1 I think?

I'll be out to get you tomorrow though. Also if you want to up the games and start 2 tabling that'd be awesome (10 games isn't much to determine who's got an edge, and I want to practice multi tabling + it's not that hard vs same opponent).

Let me know what you think.
blsmur

when i play 2 tables HU
it is usually against 2 different opponents

as playing the same guy is just playing the same guy for more money

so lets just finish theses 10 game as singles

and see what we can learn

my reason to  play brokerstars members is to learn not just take their money

i want to make my play the best it can be
Jakester1288

Taking a 5bi shot, single tabling the $7 reg speeds. If I drop 5bi's I'll have to recoup my losses at the $3.50's again.

Wish me luck!
p0keherj0ker

Goodluck, look forawrd to following your progress.

Getting that new monitor etc, must surely be +EV and also motivate you to get your grind on, it definately would for me  Very Happy

Gogogo.
Jakester1288

Not going to update on last weeks goals, since my intentions changed alot (started 2 tabling, decided to mix in turbos, etc).

Graph:

Next weeks goals:
[] 150 HUSNG's if I 2 table (drop to 1 tabling if I lose focus/play/run poorly
[] buy The Math of Hold'em
[] review the games that I didn't notetake well in, in game reviews
[] 2 hours of book reading/note making
[] warm up before every session, warm down after
[] watch 2 strat vids, 1 tilt vid
[] exercise bike 4x
[] sort out a diet on Monday/Sunday night
[] don't be lazy, actually acheive goals you set for once

Going to spend this week grinding $3.50's and if my roll is ok, mixing in $7's too, working on my strategy/2 tabling, before hitting the $7 games a bit more (but still keeping some $3.50 turbos/maybe trying out 4 mans) next week. If I hold 8% roi this week and hit my volume target of 150 games, I should make ~$40-$50, boosting my roll to $180-$200. Anyway, for once I really want to acheive what I've set, I never have before. cmon grind grind grind Jake!
Jakester1288

At $7 turbos now, grind grind grind!

If I can't get full time work at my current job at the end of the year, I'll probably look to 'go pro' at the end  of October Very Happy

good luck with everything, looking sweet so far. I intend to read collin moshman's book too, got it as a kindle one and it looks class.

Not sure how it'll compare to Bill Chen's book though, I loved that Smile
Jakester1288

Apparently this is better than Mathematics of Poker, because it covers a ton more topics, isn't only game theory based, and is more applicable/easier to understand for math noobs like myself Smile
Jakester1288

22-28 August
Overall, a good week. I got in over half the volume I want 2 tabling while 1 tabling, but I should have played a few more. I made some $$$, studied a bit, sorted out a bit of a studying plan, and I've started looking into some options for coaching. I've decided I'm going to be taking Mersennary/HokieGreg's Fasttrack in October if I can get in.

I ordered 'The Math of Hold'em' which has only just came out I believe, the table of contents looks absolutely sick, and I'm a complete math fish, and this should be what I need to get my game up to scratch.

Weekly graph:

Goals (week in review):
[] 150 HUSNG's if I 2 table (drop to 1 tabling if I lose focus/play/run poorly - 1 tabled, 82 games
[x] buy The Math of Hold'em
[] review the games that I didn't notetake well in, in game reviews
[] 2 hours of book reading/note making
[] warm up before every session, warm down after
[x] watch 2 strat vids, 1 tilt vid
[] exercise bike 4x
[] sort out a diet on Monday/Sunday night
[] don't be lazy, actually acheive goals you set for once

Achieved 3/9 - success rate - 33%

Goals (next week, 29th August to 4th September ):
[] 100 $7 turbos single tabling (drop to $3.50s at $105
[] review marked hands 9pm every night
[] reg games no more than 25 minutes, take 5 minute break from computer and poker before returning (study for licence test)
[] 2 table $3.50 reg speeds when feeling fresh
[] actively watch 2 strategy videos + take notes
[] Watch 1 non strategy poker video
[] read 'Treat your poker like a business' while on public transport
[] Try to avoid distractions such as MSN during grinding/studying times
[] Don't hit sleep on alarm at all

Really wanna achieve these goals, setting the bar at 100 turbos (definitely doable), these goals aren't really pushing myself too much, got a party to attend on Friday night, and for once I actually want to achieve my goals before I push them up again Very Happy
Jakester1288

August

Pretty good month by my standards. Once again pretty much failed all my goals (350 games, 10%+ ROI, 2x gym a week, 5x bike a week, have a happy month). September will be much better, as I'll be getting my drivers licence, having a birthday (one year closer to dying), organising which route I'm going with coaching, and hopefully getting in 400 $7 turbos, maybe hitting up some $15 reg speeds at the end of the month if I run/play good, and hopefully making $250+.

August graff

September goals
[] 400 turbos
[] Move to $15's when rolled
[] Get together some $$$ for October Fasttrack or decide where I want to go with coaching
[] Regular exercise
[] Get <73kgs
[] Get >75% success rate in ALL weekly goals (from PG&C thread)
[] $250+
[] Hit all my goals for once
Jakester1288

Righto, got some motivation. I've bet $50 of my money to $25 of a friends on me playing 450 games in September. I realise this is probably -EV as I'll have to multitable, but I spose in the long run working on my 2 tabling will have a positive effect. I'll be playing $3.50's again when I'm 2 tabling, and might even try 3-4 tabling at $1.50's just to win the bet really. I might just spend the first 1-2 days grinding 4 tables then resume normal $7 grinding after that. We'll see.
Jakester1288

No time to write out a weekly report now, gotta go to school real soon. Graphs of last week:

First $100 day yesterday Very Happy

So now my rolls $430, I'm playing $15s only, going to start sitting turbos and some more regulars too. Bumhunting $30's when my roll hits 600, can't waiitttt.

Also I spent a bit of time messing around at $1.50s 4-6 tabling to try and win a stupid prop bet with a mate, called it off though.

Goals for 5th-11th September
[] 80 $15 HUSNG's

Keeping it simple this time.
kolonel

Nice work mate, solid.

Keep putting the hard work in, and the rest will take care of itself.
Jakester1288

Upping this weeks volume to 150 SNG's cus I've got some time off work this weekend.
doodiewiz

Looking good mate! Stay focused!

Decided to leave my job for a few personal reasons, now I'm playing poker for a living. I'm not even any good haha. I've got about $100 on my bank card, and $380 in my bankroll. gogogo!

z1s6arn

Tell us more about your story and personal situation.

Would love to hear more. And best of luck!

z1
Jakester1288

If I tell you the story, it gets boring. I wanted it to sound cool that I quit my job with $100 to my name, so I'll leave it there.
Jakester1288

Ok, now 15bi below EV, bankroll decimated, down to $309, dropping to $7's to regain confidence and just put in volume to get out of this. Will probably move back up and take another 5bi shot at $15's when my roll hits $350.

Also I'm now making it my goal to be getting up the top of the TAGpoker leader boards, firstly for volume, ROI and profit will hopefully follow soon. A lot of good players w/ very solid profit/ROI's, but I'm noticing a lot of their volume isn't too high:

http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1138406/Capture.PNG

http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1118962/Capture.PNG

So if I can keep motivated and get that volume in, improvement will come naturally especially w/ studying the game too, and hopefully sometime next year I can overtake some of these guys to be sitting top 5 lifetime Very Happy
z1s6arn

You got a specific volume ROI and profits target for the Sep leader board my man?

z1
Jakester1288

Nah, was a bit late, and have been on a downswing this month. Would probably like to hit 400 games, I've got trial exams next week which may slow me down a bit.
z1s6arn

Ahhhh. I see gl with the exam(s). You need 450 to beat that prop bet right?

Take care my man

z1  Smile
Jakester1288

Nah, prop bet was cancelled.

In typical Jakester1288 fashion, I have managed to fail all these goals. 87 HUSNG's, had to drop in limits, dropped $150 at $9 avg stake, in the first week after I quit my job. Probably a pretty bad mistake, but oh well.

Next weeks goals are going to be simple:
[] 100 HUSNG's
[] Set up learning plan, set my schedule w/ ppl I'm discussing strat with
blsmur

hey Jake  I been watching you play  sometimes

and I think you  a bit agro  on the table

might be good to slow it down a bit

I am sure at the higher levels the players are smarter

I think going for "PRO " is fine  but keep your bankroll management on the conservative side

it will help to cover "TILT "

we all suffer from it at times

feel free to say hello on skype
and i am happy to play you some more
might help you build your roll

LOL
z1s6arn

Best of luck buddy! Yeah keep it simple. Just get used to playing on a consistent basis. Get your routine going if you know what I mean.....

Smash the tables up!

z1 Cool
YATHINNK

I'm not knocking your ambition but quitting a job to try and play poker might have been best saved to when you had built a roll for the 50s + which is where you can actually start making a little money.

I know you probably understand this but I definitely wouldn't trust my own lifelihood on poker at all, let alone at the low to mid stakes.
Jakester1288

So I'm still trying to fight out of this downswing. Last few sessions I've noticed some tilt and frustration creeping in, which isn't good. I've got 'The poker mindset', had it for ages, I'm going to have to start reading it.

Been doing a bit of reading and asking some other HUSNG regs, and apparently this downswings pretty standard. I've had my game reviewed by 2 coaches and 2-3 players, and they all think I'm playing pretty solid.

Also, I'm trying to set up a bit more of a schedule in my life/for poker. It's looking like this

4:20-5 - Warm up (reviewing a HH or two, setting goals)
5-6:30/7 - Session
7pm-8pm - Exercise bike/dinner
8pm-9pm - Session/poker study/school study
9pm - Review (HH reviews again now that I'm downswinging, + talking w/ some skype buds about tough hands)
Jakester1288

Going to start setting goals daily, posting before I start my session, then evaluating after my session.

Friday 16 September
[] 15+ HUSNG's
[] 1 hh review to warm up, 1 to warm down
[] 30 mins exercise bike
Jakester1288

Dropped over half my roll now, this downswing just will not end. Dropping back to $7 reg speeds, will shottake $7 turbos again when I have 35bi's and a bit of wind in my sails.

Tonight/tomorrow goals
[] 20 $7 reg speeds
[] review leakfinder
[] Jared Tendler video
[] read some of 'The Poker Mindset'
Jakester1288

Ok 1 week of school then I get a 2 week break, my goals during the last week and 2 week break are:

[] 60 hours playtime
[] 45mins-1hr bike/day
[] track foods eaten/eat < maintenance most days
[] get <72kgs (currently 76.3, not sure if 4.3kgs in 3 weeks is achievable w/ such short term variance due to water weight and all that **** + your body actually taking time to lose weight, but I'll give it a shot.
z1s6arn

Did you try to push through tilt because of the pressure of trying to meet volume targets?

z1
Jakester1288

Nah, when I tilt I always take a break and stuff.
Jakester1288

Forgot to set my goals for today. On Sunday I was tilted and playing pretty bad. I really need to get my tilt in order, it's not very bad but I just get frustrated and don't want to play, however I do want to study.

Got in 22 games today + listened to a Jared Tendler interview about motivation, unfortunately didn't take anything from it. Failed to hit the exercise bike, and ate tons of shit food Sad

Goals for 19th-25th Sept
[] 20 hours playtime
[] Set goals ITT every day
[] Warm up before very session
[] 30 mins bike/day
[] 1 tilt video
[] 1 strategy video

Last week of school then 2 weeks off, no reason to not grind my ass off really. Will be extremely disappointed if I don't hit these goals.

Playtime 2.6/20 hrs

Run orsm today, won every flip and sucked out 55>77, kinda due because I've been running bad lately but yeah. Only got in 9 games in 2.6 hours (reg speeds), but I maintained 100% focus, so, so, so happy with how I went today. Also hit up 40 mins of exercise bike, (doing extra 10 mins a day this week to catch up for missed day yesterday).

Going to start recording some vids of my play to send to other regs, if I posted up in here would anyone watch/leave comments?

September 20 goals

[] Complete assignment
[] 40 mins exercise bike
[] Get in 1-2 hours playtime (assignment will take up most of my time unfort, but once it's done I have nothing for like 2.5 weeks, grind grind grindddd!

Honestly so excited for these holidays. All the other ppl at school are thinking about hanging out w/ friends and shit, I'm thinking about playing 5-6 hours of online poker a day. Sick life. Oh well, if I want to create a future it's what I've gotta do. Will try to set some hard goals (for me) in these holidays.

Also, long term goal here: Play Aussie Millions $5.3k HU event in 2014.

Jakester1288

I've never been better mate, I've just moved permanately to $15 reg speeds, shotting $15 turbos, playing some $7 4 mans etc. I'll try to post more strategy around these forums, I just don't like digging old threads and there's not many new hand posts these days.

Good man!

Go go go.

doodiewiz

Back at the 15s again? Nice one mate! How are you finding the STs?
Jakester1288

Meh not really playing ST's these days. I kinda wanna focus on learning to beat the midstakes in 75bb poker first, because I need to start withdrawing about $100/mth soon (roll currently $430), and I don't wanna  face hyper turbo variance/have to play $3's. I'm going to mix them in sometimes when I'm waiting for action at 4 mans and when action slows up in $30s (my next step Very Happy)
