One day you must lose your virginity !

Hi all,

First thing of all, English is'nt my first language so I apologize for mistakes and probably some weird way of phrasing things.

As I said in the title I'm losing my virginity. I have never wrote on a forum before. I read tons on them but never participate. There is a few reasons for that, I would say the main is that I'm not much of a "community person" and sometimes I'm having trouble with forums dynamics. That being said, I dropped on here and since I just started lately to play HUSNG and I really enjoy it, this might be a good place for me to finally try to make a little "blog" to help me.

About poker...

I have been playing online poker since 2005. This is a good amount of time but definitely does'nt mean I'm good. BUT I LOVE the game, I really do. At the beginning a was a total nit-scary-weak-tight... Then I learned Smile

At first, I played Mtts and sit n'gos then I got fed up and turn to short handed cash game. I think I learned a lot playing cash game, got better with hand reading that's for sure.

I have studied this game (NLH) like I have'nt studied anything in my life. I manage to watch pretty much all the coaching videos from most of the main coaching sites out there. That's a bit of a problem for me, I study more than I play. I want to correct that.

I'm the type of person who usually have high expectations from myself. I have been doing ok with poker. (Nothing sick just manage to make a little money and not lose) But I don't feel like I'm a good player. I'm often confuse, unsure. It's always hard for me to tell myself "ok you lost but that was the right play". And that's something I think is really important in poker. Knowing when you were right and of course the "we-will-never-say-it-enough" not to be results oriented. I struggle with that.

My BR adventures was starting from 50$ to 2500$ then lost it all. That was at the very beginning. Then, I took a break, deposited 600$ and brought it to 2100$. (mostly by luckboxing "first depositros freerolls" and things like that.) Recently I needed money so I cashed out 700$ That means My actual roll is 1400$.

Why am I doing this thread ?

I do it for two reasons. ( Definitely nothing original Wink)

1-I want some kind of discipline, I know I need to give myself goals and try to reach them. Don't want to look egoistical but I mainly do this for myself.

2-Sometimes, I would like advice from other players.

Now, lets get into some concrete things.
As I said, I recently felt in love with HU. At first, I was playing HU cash game but since I play micro stakes, the rake is just ridiculous , I thought that for building up, it would probably be better to play HUSNG. And I happened to like it a lot so I think I'm gonna stick to this for a while.

That bring me to the #2 reason of this thread. I want to ask you some advices.

My roll, as I said earlier, is 1400$ but as a start, I want to dedicate just a part of it for HUSNG, so, I chose one site on which I have 450$. If I refer to the nice graph "The stairway to high stakes" I should be playing 10,50$ BI... Problem is, I'm a sick bankroll nit Embarassed , and I dont feel comfortable playing that already, I just got into HU, I dont feel I have that much of an edge. I have a sample of 170 games in which my ROI is 7.4%. This is'nt so bad but first; that sample means nothing, second; as I said, I dont feel like I have that much of an edge, it's more like: "I win when I'm lucky and I lose when I'm unlucky or card dead." I do sometimes make some good reads or good plays but... really not that much.

So, my thought would be. (this would be one of my first goal) Getting a decent sample to figure what my ROI would be and well, if I do good I will go for the 10,50$.

What do you think a decent sample would be for my situation ?

My other question is about volume. As I said earlier I study more than I play. I want to play more. But, I tend to quit easily when I'm not running good. I often find reason not to play cause I feel I,m not playing my best game. (This might be a good thing though, hard to say) That being said, I have A LOT of time. I could play almost all day long if I wanted to. So, what would you recommend for volume? (I know this question might seems a little weird, since it's really people dependent but, I'm just looking for general advice from experimented HUSNG players )

So, that would be it for a start, I'm gonna wait for your feedback and I'll probably fix my goals regarding to that.

Thanks for reading,

Hello man.

Firstly welcome to the site there is a ton here to help you on your way. This page will help with regards to learning how to play against differing player types which is the key to beating heads up.

Secondly I wouldn't worry about 'working out your ROI' I would just focus on improving your game and then the ROI and more importantly $$$ will follow.

The most important thing is to have a game plan to start working towards, watch videos, make notes, do sweat sessions, organize a coaching package, anything really but put something positive in place and start working towards it.

Best of luck.

Agree with Broker, take his course to get some great fundamentals, or watch the vids from here + HUSNG.com then get some coaching done later on, and make sure you spend time studying the forums, and you'll be well on your way. If you're not comfortable with the $10's yet, just play the $5's, they're the same as the $10's pretty much (from what I hear), but a smaller buy in.

Hi guys,

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I appreciate it.

I'm facing a little bad run lately, (the deck seems to be in love with all my opponents) but this will end soon right ??! Wink  Very Happy

Broker: Thanks for the quick reply and the link. I had already started to watch these vids and I will, of course, continue. And BTW congrats for this websites and all the great works, it's nice and makes us wants to get good  Very Happy Also, I must say I like your style, your approach. As i said in the first post, I 've watch tons of coaching videos and I found sometimes in training videos some "trainers" tends to be a little too "cocky" for my taste. I like that you're able of "self critic" (not sure I writing this right but I hope you get it Smile)

I'm not ready yet for coaching, I think I still need practice by myself and also I'm moving on july first, changing city so, my mind is on that a lot lately but i will look for it. Maybe a new start in my new home.

That being said, as I wrote in my first post, studying, is what I do most. I think I dont play enough, I dont practice enough. I'm looking for some concrete goals and some kind of discipline (cause I really suck at this) but I can't seems to find what I should do.

So once again, any ideas is welcome, or maybe just share what you guys are doing. Do you fix yourself numbers of games you want to play ? etc

See you and Gl all !

Goals

Well, I read a few thread and I finally decide what I'm gonna do.

Arrow  Continue playing 5$ BI until I feel comfortable moving up
Arrow  Play 15 games a day
Arrow  (typical) Avoid tilting

I don't know if I'm happy with my day or not, I started up running good, being patient and I was up 6BI than I ran into 2 aggros that got me and were hitting a little to much, and then I spew 2 BI.

It's weird because, I'm not use to be spewy, usually, when I'm disgusted by to many 2-3 outters, I quit. So it's telling me that I have to be careful with wanting to play a certain number of games in a day. I still want to keep this goal, but, I will have to choose carefully my moments and still quit when I know I wont play well.

So, for today I played 16 games and I'm up 2BI.

I will take it.

Little changes

Hi all,

Hope you're all running good.  Wink

I have been doing what I said I would and I decided to make some changes.

I started playing 10,50$ BI. First, because I don't see any difference in the level of the opponents. Second, when I play 10$ I definitely care more about the match. I WANT to win which is good because I'm more into the match and I fight until the last chip ! Third, even being the bankroll nit I'm am, I'm rolled for it. I actually decide to use a 40BI BRM.

Now, for the "15 games a day" goal, well, I reach it mostly everyday without even counting... so I think to avoid forcing myself to play when I run bad, I might just not care about a precise numbers.

So, here is my graph since I started playing HUSNG.

Any comment is welcome.

For me, since I was playing shorthanded cash game before, I obviously think this look like a roller coaster. I'm anxious to reach a decent sample and get a decent idea if I can do well in this.

One thing is sure, is that I like it a lot.

So I wish you all the best. Once again, any comments is welcome.
Have a nice day... week... month... life...
