lemon's bankroll building thread

Hi.

Decided to make my own bankroll building thread after reading some others as a way to motivate myself and share my progress with others. I'll also try to post things I have learned or in thought about. I don't play much but I do spend quite a bit of time just thinking about poker and related stuff and I believe it helps alot. Probably my strongest side is approach to poker in general - I don't really tilt, because I understand variance. I don't expect to win whenever I play. I don't feel unlucky when I lose a flip. And most importantly, I'm very critical of my own play. I see many poker players just blame EVERYTHING except themselves when they run bad or whatever, they somehow think they are good players. Well, I don't think I'm a good player, because I'm playing 2$ HU SNGs, durrrrr. I however strongly believe that I can improve and become a good player through hard work and I will do it, sooner or later. I have some expierence as 6-max player and I have watched a bunch of free videos from brokerstar and I think thats more than enough to beat microstakes, especially if I put in some effort.

So yer, here are some goals!

1. 10 games per day on average.
2. Have fun.
3. Continously improve as a player.
4. Extremely longterm - make poker my main source of income. 1k$ a month would be way more than enough to live comfortably here and I think it's not that hard to achieve at say, 50$ games.

I have played 70 HU SNGs so far, at 2$ level mostly. Games are quite fast paced, regular speed ones average about 11 minutes. I started out with ~85$ and I'm at 120$ right now which I think is a great pace for someone new to the games. I'll be using somewhat aggresive BRM, 20 buyins for level and move down if I lose 3-4 buyins. I've already played one 5$ game (won it obviously  Cool) and I'll hopefully be able to move up to 5$'s completely soon. Hope I run good, hehe.

I'm playing on chilipoker. Got a kickback bonus going on there. Anyways, thanks for the support. Took a shot at 5$'s but lost 3 games very quick. Played only winning players and somehow got involved into this leveling war with all of them. Tried to pull of some plays that didn't work out because my opponents were at the top of their range, or so I thought at first. Here's a hand, playing second match against this guy. We had a quite aggresive dynamic going on and he probably viewed me as a maniac. He also slowplayed strong hands quite a few times and caught few of my bluffs.

Hero (BB): 1,400
BTN: 1,600

Pre-Flop: (60) K 6 dealt to Hero (BB)
BTN raises to 100, Hero raises to 300, BTN calls 200

Flop: (600) 5 6 A (2 Players)
Hero bets 400, BTN calls 400

Turn: (1,400) 9 (2 Players)
Hero bets 700 and is All-In, BTN calls 700

River: (2,800) 2 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Results: 2,800 Pot
Hero showed K 6 and LOST (-1,360 NET)
BTN showed A A and WON 2,800 (+1,420 NET)

So when he showed aces I just went "FML, so unlucky to run into top of his range, I run so bad, whine whine whine". Yeah its true that it was top of his range, but my play was terrible overall. He's NOT folding any decent pair here against me, so all I'm doing is folding out missed broadway cards, which would fold flop anyways. I made some similar mistakes in other matches too, mostly because I got involved in this really aggro dynamic and leveling wars where's a lot of variance involved and to be honest I'm not too good at (yet, hopefully?). So for the next games against regulars I tried to stick to smallball style unless they were really punishing my limps hard and just not go crazy with bluffs overall.

So I went to 2$'s to rebuild a little bit and took another shot, this one went much better. Been playing mostly winning players and I'm 7-5 overall now which im quite happy about. It's funny how smallball can really piss off some TAGs. This guy was playing really solidly at the start but as match went on  he got more and more spazzy, which culminated in this hand:

Hero (BTN): 1,790
BB: 1,210

Pre-Flop: (90) 3 3 dealt to Hero (BTN)
Hero calls 30, BB raises to 180, Hero raises to 1,760 and is All-In, BB calls 1,030 and is All-In

Flop: (2,420) J K 7 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Turn: (2,420) A (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

River: (2,420) 5 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)

Results: 2,420 Pot
Hero showed 3 3 and WON 3,000 (+1,820 NET)
BB showed 9 8 and LOST (-1,150 NET)

He has been punishing my limps quite hard when blinds got harder, pretty much 100%. This was the first time I've 3bet shoved and while I'm too lazy to work the maths out but my shoving range must be pretty damn wide for his call to be profitable, hehe. Anyways, I think I'll maybe record a video or two against winning players so I could get some feedback, any takers?

Not much progress at all since the last update. BR is at 132$ now so made about 5$ since the last update. Better than nothing I suppose but I'm having pretty big swings and just in general not much is working out on the tables. Just seem to run into big hands often. I "compensate" by sucking out time to time but it really isn't enough, heh. I'm winning right now at 5% ROI which isn't too bad I suppose but it's just so hard to put in volume when you sit down and lose 3 games in a row to various coolers. I don't tilt, I just don't want to play anymore. Needless to say I've failed my 10 games per day goal pretty hard. It's funny how human's mind works, if I were steadily grinding out that 5% ROI I'd probably be quite happy but now you have this:

and I just can't say for sure even if I'm a winning player at these games. I mean if I lose 3 games I'm in the negative. Guess I'm just not used to swings at SNGs yet.

As a more positive note I've been playing quite a bit better against winning players, not really having much trouble anymore. Most of them just play very systematically and don't adapt much if at all so it's not too hard to have an edge over them. Maniacs have been owning me on the other hand, heh.

Anyways, thanks for reading and good luck.
Brokerstar

It's all a learning curve but with maniacs it feels easy to be run over. The main thing against them is to get some kind of hand and play it in a way that makes them think you're weak and spew off their stack as a bluff.

These are the key player types to slow play (something I see a lot of players mis apply) as they often have nothing and so inducing spazz plays from them will be your friend.

Good luck and you're heading in the right direction.

Things aren't going well. Nothing just works for me, it's very annoying. Not that my opponents are sucking out or something, I just keep running into huge hands again and again and again, it's very frustrating. In the past few days I could feel tilt creeping into my game so I will be taking a break for a day or two.

BR @ 122$, bleh   Sad .
lemon

Been a while since I've updated, it's because I've gone through a nasty downswing where I kept getting coolered again and again and again. Had to move down to 2$ games at one point, but just kept playing and finally I'm back in the bussiness. People apparently aren't joking when they say poker is all about discipline.

goat sacrifice at game 180

Hopefully things keep going in the same direction, I'm itching to start playing 10$ games. Will do when I have 200$, don't really see a reason to use tight BRM right now, just want to move through the limits as fast as possible.
Dr_Anger

Yea dude, swings can be brutal, just gotta keep taking the shots on the chin and pressing on. Try not to let the beats bother you (it's hard sometimes haha.) You seem like you put in pretty steady volume, which is good. I've only played 6 games in the last 4 days. Sad

Teach me to grind!!! lol

lol Razz swing can be insane even if your a winning player. just got to keep the faith!

Almost at 10$ games now! BR @ 192$ so I need to win just a few more games to take a shot at those 10s. Haven't been able to put in much volume because of other stuff but thankfully rungood continues and I'm playing well. Been watching a few leakfinder videos here, did you know there's a bunch of hidden ones? If you take a look at the video page you'll see like 5-7 leakfinder videos there in total, but you can reach the rest by manually editing the URL  Surprised.

http://www.tagpoker.co.uk/outer_p...g_videos/husng_leakfinder_20.html - change the last number to whatever you want and watch all the videos, woot. Now let's just hope those weren't supposed to be secret or something  Razz .
