Hi from the UK

Hi all,

I have browsed various poker forums but never really wanted to get involved mainly due to adolescent behaviour, but don't get me wrong, i like a good laugh, I just can't be bothered with all the excessive poo-flinging that goes on in many online communities. Then I stumbled upon this forum, TagPoker. It makes a refreshing change, after reading quite a few of the threads I have decided to join up and join in.

A bit of background… I have been playing live poker on and off for about 4 years. Nothing serious, just the odd mix of all games types and formats (HE, Stud Hi, Razz, O8, Tourneys, SnG's, cash etc..). I live in the UK and have a background in tech and around four years ago got interested in futures & forex trading which has helped me get away from the daily grind and is now how i earn a living from home.  As my style of trading leaves me with lots of time kill during the day I want to get more serious about my poker. I don't know if I will have what it takes to play the $100+ tables but I want to give myself a challenge to at least get to the point where i am consistent in the mid stakes. As with trading though, the first thing I need do is get all the basics down and be disciplined.

So, I have started going through some of the free videos (only 3 so far) and will continue to watch many of the others. Hopefully this will get the balls rolling and begin to give me the heads-up (pun intended Smile ) on playing styles etc…

One starter question I have that I hope some of you can help me out with is.. what size bank roll should I start with? My thinking says I should first concentrate on beating the micro-stakes and this would mean my bank roll only needs to be pretty small. What level of micro/small stakes & bank roll size would you recommend for a recreational player (that's me) that wants to move up a gear?

Cheers,
Pete

$50-$100 to start with, play the $2s. If you do well, no need to hang around there to long.  Stick to around 30 buy ins as you move up, and you won't go far wrong.

Good Luck

Hi Pete, welcome to the forums.

I would start with $2 games and would use BR management of 30bi's to move up to the next stake. So I would start with a BR of $60 then move up to the $5 games when your comfortable enough with getting the basics down and you have grinded your roll to shot take the $5's at $150.

Obviously its personal preference some people shot taking with 20-25 bi's some people shot take with 40-50bi's its completley up to you.

Just make sure you have a move down stratergy and if you stick to it thats the first (and most important) part of mastering SNG's.

I wish you GL! I would also reccomend the training from Brokerstar

Aggreed w/ the above posts very good advice. Most importantly is becoming active in the forums, asking questions and posting of tough situations as many of us love to debate hands/situations/bet sizing. Welcome to the site! and hold on, things are gonna change for you!!

Hello mate and welcome to the gang.

The guys have already given you a good idea for a bankroll. The rest is just learning the game and the money WILL just follow if you play correctly.

Truth is that once you know the system, there really is no real gamble at all.

Good luck my man.

I started with $25--- and have never deposited since.
allthough my bankroll has fluctuated greatly, mainly attributed to alcohol...

If you can afford it I would suggest depositing $150 - $200 and starting with the $5 games.

The player pool at the $5s will be the same as the $2s, the rake is a lower % and you will build your roll faster assuming you are winning.

Good luck !

Hey Pete, welcome to the site.

How did you get started with futures & options? What was the best method of learning how to trade profitably?

Just what I was thinking - we should have a build a bankroll trade thread!

Pete - as Sausage as stated, deposit $200, play the $5 games, watch some videos and you'll go from there.....GL & welcome

Thanks for the great welcome everyone. It's very much appreciated.

Rhodes & MrJayOMG, it took bloody ages to figure out trading. It took a few busted bank rolls too. For me (I say this now, but wouldn't have when I started)  I only started making money trading once I quit listening to everyone else. Sounds a bit wierd I know, but there are so so many scam artists out there who claim to be able to teach you to trade. The truth is, until you learn to lose properly you will not win properly. Just like with poker, learn to take the losses, don't tilt and take things very steady. There are lots of ways to trade and win, just make sure you trade according to the size of your account. I bet this all sounds way too familiar to poker players!!

Right, on to the micro's!!

Did you find any literature helped you with the basic or did you just jump straight in & learn from your errors?

It was a bit of both. I got interest in it when what i thought was an awesome Stock to own (Apple) started heading down. I closed the trade and lost a few grand. Then it shot up.  My thoughts were .... B'stad!!  That got me interested to try and figure it out.

I then read as much as I could and traded all sorts of instruments. Knowing what i know now, I would suggest people start by looking at the Forex market and trade tiny Micro accounts. For general trading info, start by reading www.BabyPips.com. That will give you lots of information regarding technical analysis and a basic understanding of the Forex Market. From there, you will find your way into stocks, options, futures... anything really. Best advise at the early stage is..... don't pay anything early on. Everything you need to get started is online for free.

Feel free to skype me if you want. I help out and regularly chat with many traders online.

On the poker side..... how come the $2 players are so bad Smile  Hmmm, may be it's cos I have seen BrokeStars vid's!!    Almost at the $5's

Cheers,
Pete

Oh, one other thing. If you do open a forex trading account, search for forex rebates. It's the same deal as rake-back but for forex trading. One site i use is http://www.cashbackforex.com    -    I'm nothing to do with them. They just give me back some cash Smile

Update

Been a bit busy with trading activities this week so i haven't managed much poker at all. I did beat the $2 games though to move to the $5. Fingers crossed the opponents will continue to be soft.

I decided (just 5 mins ago) to send BrokerStar an email to get the ball rolling with the training side of things so hopefully I should be able to move through the $5's & $10's with more speed.

Cheers,
Pete
