Empowering Geeks (Super Nerd)I think that most of us here, studying a game have an element of geek in us. I know I do.
One thing that has been historically true, by large is that geeks don't often assert themselves as they should against domineering bullies.
Lots of you know that I've been training in a mixture of martial arts ever since I was seven years old. I was small with red hair, wore braces and was a civilian kid sent to a military school. I was a walking bulls eye.
Times are changing
I see examples of people not standing up for themselves for fear of being hit or not knowing what to do in a physical confrontation full stop. So rather than possibly put themselves in the line of fire, they often just duck their head and shy away their god given right to say how they feel.
Video Of Super Nerd
This video is inspiring. The super nerd in question has been studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and looks to be only a white belt level but none the less, he now has the powers to carve his own way in life. No longer must he be kicked around by the alpha males.
This is truly a triumph of human intelligence over brute force and ignorance and I for one salute this champion of life!!!!!

Lol! Im a novice but been doing kick boxing for over a year and some filipino boxing/mma at bob breens place(got a bit rubbish there no because they moved gym) for some time. You heard of him?
Anyway, I do it mainly for the way it makes me feel. Increased energy levels and IMO def a link between the body and the mind. Nothing like a 2/3 hour muay Thai workout. If I go back to Thailand again def be doing some training next time.
How is BJJ? I was gonna try it but wasn't sure I wanted to get that up close and personal with big hairy blokes:)

No I never heard of him to be honest.
With regards to BJJ, it's changed my life. I started martial arts at 7 years old. I wasted a lot of time doing karate because I didn't know better then found Muay thai which was great.
I did Muay Thai from 16 to 25 then I got into BJJ. Since finding BJJ, I have no fear of a fighting against anyone in the world as long as they are not good grapplers too ha ha. (That's a liberating feeling)
With striking, there was always a size and strength limitation. At the end of the day a 60kg person could have all the black belts he wants in striking martial arts but will almost certainly lose to a 110kg boxer.
I even wrote about why I chose the martial arts that I have here: http://www.jiujitsumma.net/

Good read Dom! Yeah i've always thought striking ability and groundwork was the key. I guess i'm average height/average weight and spend most of time running away from the guys at muay thai when we spar, because they are all ginormous and a lot of them have 3+ years training. I can sometimes win a sparring contest with a big bloke if he's completely green though...
Not sure my goal is to be a ninja, but i'd like to be able to defend myself in angry cheeseburger confrontations. Must admit am very intrigued by BJJ and most likely will check it out as there's a class very close to me:) I have learnt a bit of grappling already and I heard BJJ is a great way way to build strength too....

So in your opinion- the ultimate "street brawler/fighter"- would it be all about grappling? Reading your blog has got me interested in jiujitsu/martial arts in general. I may sound stupid here, bu have no idea since I have 0 experience in martial arts (many of which have rules which disallow many moves)- but I would be pretty scared if I faced Mike Tyson...
It's been a long time since I've been in a fight for real (when I was 14 lol) but I seem to remember then it was all about confidence/intimidation. Basically that already meant you won, and the other guy is always trying to avoid getting beat up while you are doing all of the beating (plus it was all about getting someone in a headlock- we can't really punch/girlie scratch each other or do anything that leaves bruises).

It really all depends on what you want? I'd say a perfect mix just from a self defense point of view is western boxing and some form of grappling.
My personal experience in terms of street fights (and there has been a fair few in my life) has been that punches and take downs of some description are most common.
Confidence comes from knowing what to do. For example, how confident would you feel playing heads up vs someone who's just learning the rules of poker and can hardly remember the hand rankings? That's what 99.99% of bullies are really like when it comes to fighting. The rely too much on their size, strength and intimidation tactics.
For me personally, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is so addictive because it's an intellectual martial art. The person with the most knowledge is the most dangerous and there is just so much to learn.
To finish, I've been involved in the martial arts most of my life and BJJ has actually changed it for the better. I'm focused, addicted to training, fitter than I've been for years and I feel invincible (clearly no one is invincible but the positive projection you give off because of that is a great vibe to have).

Thanks for taking time to explain things for me broker. Tbh I haven't been into martial arts that much (all I do is swim a few lengths really for fitness). I'm just curious about it.
I've gone on and watched some fights (freely online of course) of various forms/organisations -and there are many- particularly looking for BJJ.
The problem imo is to the untrained eye it just looks so boring. Maybe they are very high level fighters but they are just holding on to each other for ages... It sure looks tiring though, as their muscles are always tensed up.
Then after 5 mins of holding on, suddenly there is some very fast movement and they are on the floor and then up against the ring again etc etc. rinse, repeat. I'm afraid I have no idea what happened lol.
Maybe I can compare this to how you see maths as hieroglyphs... At least with boxing I can understand what's going on and who is winning.

This is a great video for better understanding what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu actually is and why it works so well.
At the end you'll see a 91yr old man that even at that age could likely take out most 25yr old average men, in good shape.
There are not too many boxers that are that effective, even as young as their 50's and 60's.
The point is that it's an art of leverage, not strength which means it's not only practical and effective but also that it's suitable for non athletes, girls and kids.

Nice video... Not sure if I'll take up martial arts/bjj anytime soon tbh but it is more interesting than I thought, and involves much more than just size/strength/stamina.
Have you seen the recent film Warrior?

No or though I keep meaning to. All the guys I train with have seen it already and it's not really the kind of film you take a girl to. May have to wait for the DVD.
