Dealing with 'card-deadness' and tilt...

Hi guys,

This is the first time I'm in a position where I actually care about increasing my bankroll and don't want to have to deposit more funds any time soon and am just wondering how you folks deal with running like crap and tilting so hard you just wanna smash your freakin' keyboard through your freakin' monitor!?!?!?!?

Yours faithfully,

One pissed off camper  Evil or Very Mad

ps: set over set every fracking time! Grrrr.... *nonsensical rambling*

You just have to accept that it's simply part of the game and will always happen just like you'll always have up swings and you'll always have break even stretches too.

Some people just never learn to deal with it and then playing poker seriously perhaps isn't for them but the truth is that there is no exact answer, you just have to know yourself and formulate a plan.

i actually just smash my keyboard, smash my walls, i've thrown a laptop off the balcony like a frisbee... and i drink.

im getting better at controlling tilt now though.... usually I just scream at the PC and switch sites....lol

it doesnt matter what anyone says. you'll always get the same responses of "just variance. think about the plays, not the $" "its just one long session" "ev $ is what counts" "stay calm" etc. its difficult to do, and you have to train your brain to think differently. it's inhuman not to care. so its difficult.

read Jared Tendler's book.

All good advice. I wasn't expecting a miracle cure for tilt, like those old-age remedies. Tie dyed sheep's wool round your gonads while hopping on one foot an all that (although I should imagine that'd take your mind off poker).

I was just semi-venting a little. Trying to make fun outta myself a little really. I don't actually consider myself to be any kind of major tilter. I just get a little stroppy and stop playing for a while. Which I guess is probably one of the better ways to deal with tilt Smile .

I have the same problem of being a little results oriented, when I lose a few because of bad beats it tilts me to see my roll not growing despite getting it in good.

The way I cope is to set myself a target of games to get played per day. For example, I'll say "I want to play 10 games today" and work towards that target. Even if I lose the first 3 all-in preflop with AA, there's still 7 to go where I can make up for it. And if I am down at the end of the 10, then at least I've hit my target and don't have to tilt any more money away, and can come back the following day.

The usual advice is to make 'improving' and enjoying the game your goal, but that's a really ambiguous target. You could try putting your emphasis on volume rather than increasing your bankroll - it gives you something tangible to aim for that you can hit regardless of good/bad luck and high volume in itself should even out the variance over time.

hey...
i kinda go through this too, get reaaaally frustrated and it ends up costing me more games... too focused on the one i lose, i end up multitabling or being overaggressive and spewing my chips away... it's nasty but it just ruins your game and even though u were playing well at the starting of the session, you THINK you're still doing it but in reality your mind is elsewhere and you're losing money like no tomorrow and it's too late before you realize it..

what i suggest is trying to set yourself a limit... i used to play until i lose 3 games in a row but that didn't work... still got tilted and kept losing more... right now, i don't have much time, so i play for an hour worth a day OR if i lose 1 game, i'll analyze it and feel like when i've dissected the game well, i'll go back to playing and realize what i did wrong... i find that this gives me some time to cool off from actually playing and gets me thinking analytically and prepped for the next game...

this way, if i lose, i make sure tilt doesn't get to me by playing another game right after a bad beat.. and i also don't play for TOO long, so that impatience or anxiety gets me to be overly aggressive to try and end games too quickly...

good luck!

oh btw.. and yeah, what i do now seems to help... cause my sessions are a bit shorter, i don't get impatient... and as for the losing/analyzing technique, i still gotta test out, but hopefully it'll help me and u too Smile
