CDM's Pokerstars.FR mega-thread 2011!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey all,

I'm back posting in the BR building thread so I can moan/whine, post random poker related comments, post horribly spiky graphs and generally be a nuisance.  Very Happy  You can check out my last BR attempt on stars.com where I ran bad and complained a lot.  What's different about my stars.com experience and my stars.fr experience?  Well on .com I turned $400 into $0 over the course of a month.  On .fr I spun a €50 deposit into €1500~ over the course of 2 months, starting at the €3's and playing at €30 and €50 now.  What do I attribute my success to?  Brokerstar's condensed course (which I received FREE as part of my tiny €50 signup on Stars.fr) which included a one-to-one session with Broker.  I also paid for two GAME-CHANGING coaching sessions with Cognitive Dissonance.  In this first post I'm going to share my story and some small insights I've picked up since my time on Tagpoker!  If you don't have much patience, I also wrote a shortened version Smile.

Long version:

First of all, I want to point out that I started playing HUSNGs around 2 years ago.  I used to play the $22 turbos on Full Tilt.  Initially, I had quite a good run without having much of a clue about HU.  I played by 'feel' and so long as I didn't run into a winning reg I'd do ok.  Of course, during this brief run I thought I was a HU god and never even considered coaching or joining a site like this or HUSNG.com.

Fast forward to 2011 and I allocate $400 or so to play on Stars.com.  I rejoined Tagpoker in an attempt to help me focus more and started a BR building thread.I couldn't understand why I was losing.  I fixated on the flips in my game.  If you check out my last graph, you'll see I'm only running breakeven according to $EV adjusted!  I was freaking out that I was losing but ignoring the fact I was only playing breakeven poker at best!  There were many problems in my game - too many to list or try and describe.  The main feeling that I had when I was playing was a lack of control.  I had no CONTROL over the game.  No ability to control myself, my emotions, the flow of the game, the size of the pots, or the degree of variance I suffered.  Obviously, some of these elements can't be controlled, but it is possible to play a game that isn't completely laden with marginal flips.  Every game seemed to start off on equal footing, but after a few hands I'd feel like I was caught in a current until finally I got it in slightly ahead/behind for everything, usually way too early in the game.

I always felt like coaching or "learning someone else's system" was for losers.  It would negatively affect my ability to be creative (which I was very good at when I felt confident or in control) and cause me to play like a robot.  I was 100% completely, utterly and totally wrong.  I bit the bullet and asked Brokerstar if I could sign up to Pokerstars.fr and get his condensed course + one-to-one session.  Instead of waiting for the materials I decided to kick things off at the €3 turbos myself.  I didn't fare particularly well.  I didn't run great but I didn't play great either, and I felt embarrassed that I couldn't beat the micros. (I have had 5 figure tournament cashes in my small poker career and now I can't beat a French drooler for €3???) Pretty embarrassing.

Then I received Broker's course: the lessons on the 4 main types of opponent, the bluffing/why are we betting lesson as well as endgame stuff. I was stubborn at first, but started more and more to employ the strategies he suggests.  When I finally realized that you don't have to play a gameplan like a bible, that the purpose of a course like this is to take the concepts and assimilate them, applying them to your game I started seeing an instant improvement.  I started 'tagging' opponents with colours: yellow for TP, green for LP, red for LAG, purple for TAG (as Broker suggests in one video).  I started deploying the general gameplan he outlines merging these concepts with my game.  I was still doing the creative stuff I was happy with, but with a very solid foundation of fundamental rules to employ against different player types.

I went on a tear and leaped from the €3's to the €20's quite quickly (thanks to some aggressive bankroll management ;]).  At that level I had some issues...  I needed help and got in touch with Cognitive Dissonance and arranged a coaching session.  He plugged up some gaping leaks in my game and sent me on my way.  Boom, now I was smashing the €20s.  A session with Broker and I'm smashing the €30s.  My ROI went through the roof and I had real *CONFIDENCE* at the tables for the first time in years.

Take a look, not the prettiest but cash is cash Very Happy :

I'm learning new stuff every day.  I can't remember the last time I was genuinely fooled or tricked into putting it behind by an opponent: most of my losses are now coolers + flips (and the occasional genuine loss haha).  I've learned so much about poker in such a short time.  I know how BAD I was and still am!!! I know what I have to work on.  I had a second session with Cog Dis the other day and was informed that my endgame is something I have to do a *lot* of work on.  I was convinced I was an endgame god and that it was the most solid part of my game!!! There's always room for improvement, and I'm convinced the best money I've spent in my life is on this course and my coaching sessions.  I'm 100% serious.

Short version: I'm winning confidentally on Stars.fr thanks to Tagpoker + Cognitive Dissonance:

I've got nothing but positive things to say about this site as a resource for beginner-intermediate players and I hope to stay here for a long time racking up posts and paying forward the favor that has been done to me which has turned me from a losing player into a winning playing almost overnight.

Love you all,

Mate it's hearing things like this that make all of this so worth while (ok as well as making some money ha ha).

But seriously very well done. At the end of the day the information is only as good as the work the student puts in to studying it and you sir have really pushed yourself to get better and now you're starting to see the results of your efforts.

I have no doubt that you'll be playing higher stakes before much longer, you absorb the information well, you continue to think about it away from the sessions and you're not afraid to take shots at bigger games.

I can't wait to see the nest 6 figure graph  Rolling Eyes

awful week so far

Beat:

This week has almost crushed my soul.  I'm about to jump off for the day and I have to say, after a horrendous start to the week it looked like I might break even today and have a hope of being profitable over the weekend.  No such luck:

It's not the most drastically bad graph you'll ever see, but I was -€400ish on the first day of the week before swinging back up towards -€170.  Breakeven day yesterday and then I cashed in a hyperturbo tournament for a few quid.  Today I reset, meditated and came out only to get piledrived repeatedly by complete and utter idiots.  It's almost fear inspiring that no matter what line you take, no matter how far ahead you get it in against certain people, they parry your every +EV play by sucking out over and over and over and then have the gall not only to insult you in chat but also SNAP-ACCEPT a rematch in 1v1s.  It's a hell of a game we play.

I played a mix of €20 shootouts/1v1s, €30s and €50s and was nearing the magical breakeven point when I got smashed over and over and over by a drooler who limp called 6x punishes with 68o, who got it in with any pair pre and hit more sets than I've seen someone hit in a single session.  This same drooler got it in with Ax on an AJ5 board when i rolled up a perfect set on him. Runner runner JJ nearly had me smashing my expensive mouse.  Some days you just can't win.  Feeling very discouraged right now.  For those interested I'm running €200 below expectation for the week, but HEM doesn't account for times when I reraise 1/3rd my stack with AA and get it in on a 55x flop only to find the villain has called a 3b w/ K5ss.  It's a week where I could be +€1000 but instead I'm -€203.  Still. It could be worse.

Brag:
I hit Platinum star. WOOO hahahaha

That was a nice vent.  Time to hit the pub.  GL all.

One of the main reasons a lot of good players never make it I reckon. The mental strains of poker are something we have all taken, imagine running like that playing for a $1000 a game. Sick game.

decent start to the week!  after all the moaning last week i'm making €200 per day avg playing €20-30 only, and i ran like a 3 legged dog yesterday.  i'd say i'm on a heater but the standard at €20 SO and €30 1v1 on stars.fr is insanely low.  the action at €50 isn't great so i'm working on multitabling and clocking in better volume playing at €20 and €30.  also, i got these brain pills that helped an insane amount with my concentration today, i was a machine until i crashed about an hour ago and that meant i didn't take the LP guy from the above hand for the 6 or 8 buyins i really should have.

ALPHA BRAIN PILLS! they rule.  ok guys, gl!!!

Nice job cdm. You are on fire!
cdm

so guys.

DON'T TAKE THOSE ALPHA BRAIN PILLS!!!!!!

i did a fair bit of research on them and was really happy with the results on tuesday...  they contain a cocktail of stuff readily available in your average health shop (gaba, 5 htp etc..) and i got them because a friend strongly recommended them...  tbh, i wasn't expecting a serious effect, but on tuesday i SMASHED and was insanely "in the zone."  that night i went out and had a grand old time, met a nice lady, etc etc. and woke up wednesday with a bit of a hangover....   i popped 2 of the pills and tried to play, but got extremely nauseous after around 9 games and had to stop for the day and hang out in bed.  i put this down to a hangover....  my sleep was really badly affected too which obviously had a negative influence on my game on thursday.  thursday i got up, POPPED 3 pills (recommended dosage is 1-3, btw) as i figured i had some catching up to do since i missed wednesday.  nausea all day, felt like shit, no sleep.

finally i made the connection: the pills were obviously making me sick, which is a side effect of the ONLY suspect ingredient in the pill - l dopa.  on friday i tried to get back in the game and had the worst losing day of my poker career: €-428.  i ran incredibly bad and was jumping from 20's to 50's sitting any fish i recognized in a desperate attempt to claw back some cash.  i had next to no sleep again that night and woke up today, really needing a winning day.  my brain was so sleep deprived that i found myself giving up in games, particularly if i lost a big flip... i HANDED away a few games and played spewy and ran SO SO SO bad.... but i STILL broke even for the day.  that simple fact alone has me so encouraged and  optimistic about how things are going to be when i'm back to myself....

what's the moral of the story?  if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  i was molesting these french fish without the need for dodgy nootropics and in the end, messing with my routine screwed me out of what should have been my biggest winning week so far.  i'm done for the day, obviously Wink, and i'll be back maybe tuesday working hard to destroy at the €20 SOs and €30 1v1s, grinding my way up towards 5 figures.

peace.

hey man i was just reading in too those alpha brain pills. a couple things i noticed that you might want to take on board as well as some personal experience while been on similar drug concoctions.

oh this is very muvh tl;dr put please try as it took a long time to write Smile

1) the mixture they use looks really good, Vinpocetine, AC-11, Bacopa and GPC choline is going to be a really strong stack just on its own. (i've was on a very similar a year or so back)
2) vinpocetine, or though one of the best Nootropic to have in any stack, tends to make anyone feel ill to some level in the 20 mins or so after taking it, this seems to amplify if you have an empty stomach or your stacking with somthing else (like this pill)
3)haven't heard of "Mucuna Pruriens" before (which is unusual as i've at least heard of most things) from a little research it surpose to help with dopamine levels. This in its self makes me a little skeptical, though its not necessarily forcing higher dopamine production it will give your body the natural ability to (having more available resources etc) This worries me as its attempting to play with the reward system and this can lead to addiction at a high level! but even at a low level it might induce mood swings and slightly irrational behavior! from the internet recommended doses where between 250-300mg, in this case 1-2 capsules. if this is your first time with noops i would avoid 3 capsules on this stack!

From personal experience with some suggestions
1)alot of noops stacks, especially ones using vinpocetine, will often make you feel a little qwessy in the 10-30 mins after you take them. This will settle so don't worry about it.
2) don't take while you have a hangover or before you go drinking!!! alchol fucks with so many of these chemicals that it will often make you feel pretty terrible so i would avoid that if you can! i know reseal likes to take some stuff to cure hangovers (can't remember what) but me personally i've just found it makes me feel worst!
3) if your new to all this i would recommend not taking this or sticking to the minimum dose! i say this because your not use to these drug and won't know your own tolerance levels, also different stacks work differently with different people (noticing there can be a lot differences) so taking a stack with alot of stuff in it your body will react more!
4) also i find it interesting to have such a board arching noop stack with no Racetams in it! these are usally core noop stack ingredients and it surprises me there not there!

at a last note if you want to comtinue test noops (they are good i think it was little unfortunate you dived in at the deep end) then either drop back to 1 capsule and see how your body reacts, or try a stack thats a little bit more stable, for example i think this would be a good start;

(an x multiples means times a day, topically going morning, afternoon, evening. EG, GPC x2 take it morning and afternoon. Evening dose no later than 6pm assuming you get up an normals times of day!)
Stack
3x 500mg aniracetam
3x 10mg Vinpocetine (you can drop this to 5mg if you feel light head while on it)
2x 500mg Alpha GPC
Optional - because i really like it but its not super necessary
2x 250mg Bacopa (typically i'd take 1 dose in the morning and 1 in the evening and skip the afternoon)

im hoping this information dump had been helpful, please remember im not a pharmacist nor doing have training, most of the information here has come from the internet and personal experience so please take what i say with a grain of salt

don't be afraid to ask any question and sorry for invading your thread Razz also i hope reseal will get in here over the next couple days as he has alot more information on this subject than i do (and he's tried alot more of this stuff out lol)

thanks man. had a good read of that.  those pills are in the cupboard for the time being, tbh, they were completely unnecessary for me - i was doing fine without em!

running bad. can't hit anything.  reshipping pair vs pair in endgame so much.  pair vs dominated Ax/Kx/Qx never any good.  had so many guys down to 3bbs only to lose every flip.  not even angry, it's just really tiring me out.  i know i'll get through this patch and come out the other side but it's just so damn tiring, it's affecting my ability to get i volume.

whatever. sorry to be mr. negative today, lads. haha.
Brokerstar

Mentally tiring is a fair way to describe that feeling when you have evolved from acting with pure anger. It's the next step.

When you've completely detached yourself from any emotion and just know that x amount of games played well will = y amount of dollars, then you're in the right place.

(I'm yet to get to that last place myself ha ha).   Rolling Eyes

haha thanks for the response broker =D

you know you're running bad when your reaction to winning a shootout with a flop shove as 4:1 favorite is going YESSSSS and jumping around like a toolbox.

wish i had a better update for you guys.  i had to dip into my BR to pay a few bills and dropped back down to €20 playing mostly shootouts.  i had a very bad month and the sheer lack of results caused me to get lazy and apathetic.  i've been running good since last week until today and didn't really capitalize but today i dived on and played my ABSOLUTE a-game.  i got in great volume (around 40 games in 5 hours) but almost every single game followed the same formula:

level 1/2 - i chip away at their stack, sometimes getting to a 2:1 chip lead often cold bluffing/making excellent reads etc.
level 3/4 - i get it in favorite + lose.  chip away and get back to a 2:1 chip lead
level 5+ - i play amazing endgame and get sucked out on to lose the game.

a sample of today's allins (right hand side wins):
TT v K6o
AKo v QTo
88 v KQo
A5o v QJo
AT v A3
A8 v QK
QQ v QKo
22 v A4
TT v A6s
A6s v 33
33 v AT
ATs v KJo
AT v QKo

i'm going to stop. i'm only a 3rd the way through, and all these flips were game changes/enders.  most of the play at 20 is lower variance because the edge you have is so great over your opponents that you can limp a lot and see a lot of flops and exploit your edge there instead of opening up huge 3/4bet dynamics.  literally everyone i've played today is a loser and i'm -€200 somehow.   oh and i'm not counting the times i destroyed a moron only to run 88 into 99 during endgame play or somehow run JT into QT on a T98xx board after 3 streets of betting.  coolers/suckouts/bad luck... BUT

despite this post!!!

i'm not even remotely tilted.  i'm a little bit tired out from the day but i MOSTLY played my a-game.  it's going to suck balls coming back tomorrow after taking a 10 buyin dent to the stack but if i can play as good as i did today over the long run i'll be into 5 figures before '11 is out.  no joke.  AT lowstakes. lol. gg guys.

Good luck working through it ,its tough when you keep getting it in good and losing ,just keep a cool head and take a break if you feel it effecting you.
You play on pokerstars.french site correct ? Am i correct in thinking they have 10 20 30 then 50euro games ? What is the rake on these, its more than standard pokerstars? Can you tell me is there much traffic in the 10 and 20 euro 4 mans?

nah it doesn't affect me. i'm like yoda ;ppp  running good today so jeah.

you're right about the size of the tables, rake seems to be 6% (less that stars.it, more than .com i think):

€10 = €.60
€20 = €1.20
€30 = €1.80
€50 = €3

the traffic is tiny compared to stars.com, but the tradeoff is the standard of play is definitely worse.  the regs that i constantly run into are mostly losing players and then there's 4% winners up at 30+ (and still a lot of losers).  although my run has been kind of bad here i'll probably stick it out until 2012 and move my BR over to stars.com, i'm getting in enough volume to get to supernova if i maintain + move up levels, but yeah. i'd recommend playing here.  €10 is a joke.
cdm

hey guys! so i finished up 2011 at around €3k+/$4k in sngs.  i really thought i could do a lot better and i feel obliged to wrap up this thread with a long winded post about everything.   don't feel obliged to read - i'll put a tl;dr at the bottom Wink

on stars.fr, i kicked off at the €3s and worked my way up to the €20s.  €3, €5 and €10 on stars.fr is a complete joke.  you're playing complete braindead fools.  trying to inject logic into the random movements and lines taken by the avg smallstakes turbo HUSNG players is like trying to understand how a woman thinks - it's impossible.  there is no logic or semblance of thought, just blind random plays that don't actually make sense (e.g. "i called because i knew you had nothing", says the guy with Q2o on a 5 7 A board).  if you're at that level and happen to be reading this, i suggest you only ever bet for value unless you're 3barrelling with a view to shoving the river.  best advice i can give someone trying to make money down there..  for SOME reason, most LPs (pretty much everyone in low stakes) will call your massive pfr raise, will call your flop + turn + river barrells just as long as the river decision isn't an ALL IN decision...  i can't rationalize this, i don't want to even try... but yeah you get the idea....

i played as high as €100 (bumhunting), was open sitting €50s at one point, and considered myself a "€30 reg" at another point.  but it's not the stakes i played at or the ROI i hoped to and failed to make...  it's tilt, managing your life and understanding what you're capable of and not in poker.

i don't think i ever mentioned this, but i graduated from college with a computer science degree and then got a masters in music/media tech.  for the masters i moved back in at home, played a little bit of poker but mostly worked on a very difficult set of projects that required all of my waking life. Smile  i gave it my all and did very well, and came out into the real world desperate to get work and get up on my own two feet.  i initially tried to get work i'd be interested in (i did a masters in an interesting subject so i'd get an interesting job, not an awful cubicle job that would kill me).  i couldn't get anything though, and got kind of desperate and started doing interviews for awful jobs.  suddenly, i'm working in an awful office job sat next to an industrial strength air conditioner keeping a morbidly obese man cool beside me and blasting white noise in my ear.  i had to wear a shirt and tie and needed to be up very early in the morning and out late at night.  worse yet, the set of technologies i was supposed to be working with was actually obscured by the company's own layer of software.... in other words: i wasn't going to be LEARNING anything in the job.  the first day of work i came back and grabbed a 6 pack and lay in bed staring into space in actual shock at the course my life was taking... the 2nd day i'd made up my mind i was quitting to preserve my mental health.  quickest job i ever had. Smile

then it was poker.  almost every day for a few months..  i'd play until i burned myself out.  i played through tilt. i dived all over the stakes.  i dipped into my bankroll.  i swung from a €1500 to a €100 and back up again.  there were highs and lows, moments of me playing what i felt was my absolute a-game, moments of denial, moments of delusion, but i learned a huge amount about the game.... particularly how to manage poker within my life...  i've come to the conclusion i have around 5 hours (absolute maximum) of good play in me.  that's a 1 hour-ish warmup, and 2x2 hour sessions.  i was trying everything to turn myself into some kind of swedish zombie who played 11 hours a day and clocked in amazing volume...  but you can't force yourself to be something you're not... i tried alphabrain, ritalin, copious cups of coffee.... but i play my absolute best poker when i sit down and endeavour to play each street of each hand to the absolute best of my ability...  that's something i got from 'zen and the art of poker': "see poker as a continuum that goes on forever - the game of poker is an endless plane upon which correct percentage play eventually prevails.  the idea is to hold back until certain signals align themselves, then jump in."  i don't want to go all eastern on you guys, but i was trying to force something innately unforcable... and when it wouldn't work out i'd tilt and drop levels and play multiple tables, losing flips and then justifying shocking allins by saying 'that's a cooler'.  Razz

something great happened around this time though.  i got a job working as a programmer for a company that does iphone apps, flash development and other cool/interesting/fun projects.  the job has flexible/shortish hours and allows me to work from home. Very Happy  no industrial strength fan, soul destroying office decor, non-conversation with awful uninspiring people - it's my kickass room, cool music, dressing gown + the option to play poker on break or during the day if i feel like it. Wink  when i got the job i immediately worked out a 'moving out' date and opted to use poker to pay for it.  i decided i wanted to get my bankroll up to €3000 before the end of january and use €2500 towards the place.  having a real, tangible, achievable and modest goal would really help, i figured.

however! i'd recently hit rock bottom (around €100 total in the BR) due to bad variance coupled with tilt + 4tabling €20s and playing breakeven then losing poker.  i gave poker a break for a little while until i played a home game with some old friends..  one of them is actually a decent tournament player and he really impressed me by making amazing laydown after laydown versus an entire table of fish.  it was a game where the fish limp called 50% of their stack pre and he was finding laydowns with AQo on boards he'd missed and showing it.  it was only €10 per rebuy but i couldn't understand how he was doing it.  "why doesn't he just get it in and rebuy?" i found myself asking....  at that moment i caught myself and realized i was asking why he wasn't putting it in when he knew he was dead.  suddenly i reexamined the past 1000 or so games i'd played, all the times i'd put it in knowing i was behind versus an idiot.... all the times i'd 4b shoved 88 versus a guy who hadn't 3b once in the game.  all the times i'd called with 2 pair on a 4flush board.  all the times i'd said 'he's obviously hit that river, but i'll call anyway.'  all the times i'd stacked off with AJ pre.  it's not that i was playing BADLY... i just wasn't playing GOOD.  the whole POINT of playing poker is that you have an edge which you consistently exploit over time to profit.  every time you shrug and agree to flip you're surrendering that edge. every time you 'call just to dog him' you're playing like an idiot.  every time you play fast and hand out timing tells because "it's only a tenner" you're not playing like a professional poker player.  these realizations helped me hugely, and i hit the tables immediately the next day to begin the grind.

i milked the €100 up to €1700 by playing €10 shootouts and €20 shootouts, and i have no major aspirations to move up levels just yet, the ROI i'm getting at €20 SOs is good enough to keep me here until i've achieved this goal (also, there are no €30 SOs on stars.fr, only €50s).  i don't really have any advice for anyone, i don't feel fit to give it just yet ;P  but i will say this, if can find a way to reset yourself on every street of every hand and make the completely "profitable" decision on each street of each unique hand, you'll be doing extremely well.

my goal in 2012 is to pull in 4 figures a month avg.  hopefully i can rent + expenses out of my poker money, but i'm in a position where even if it doesn't i'll be just fine. Smile  right now i'm doing my 9-5 around 2 hours of poker crammed, then on the weekends around 4 or 5 if i have time.  i like the place poker has in my life now, i'm no longer fixating on results or staying up late worrying if i'll reach a target. i just start a timer... put on a poker playlist... and when it's over i stand up and leave.

if you got to the end, you're an absolute trooper...

tl;dr: i quit my job, played poker, was doing ok but started playing like a tard, had an epiphany, am now playing better + have a cool job.

oh and i've a hot girlfriend as well.

see ya!!

Very nice mate! And congrats on the new job. I work in the same industry and write a bit of actionscript 2 & 3 but mainly do animation and make things look pretty. Its a good industry for getting those work at home jobs. Although too easy to get distracted and play a game of poker whilst supposedly working! Very nice results and graph mate!
