40 hour study week?Hey guys, as a new member on the forum I just want to ask how many hours should I put in per week studying and practicing my game. I have an 8 hour 5 day per week day job but I'm pretty confident of putting in a considerable amount of time to poker. It will be a challenge I guess but heck if you don't work at it you don't results, so I'll see. Will 40 hours be enough??? Sounds silly I know but I'm determined. What do you guys think?
Cheers!!!!

It is good to have this attitude but try to not be just enthusiastic and work yourself off at the start because if you don't get results fast (which is hard to happen) then you'll get disappointed.
I also work full time and I can tell you it is no easy task to tackle this poker thing and keep a balanced life when you have a job.
Don't underwork and don't overwork. Try to create a habit of your study sessions and keep them small so that you can keep doing them when you are not as excited as you are now.
Cheers back at you

Let me get this right, you work a 40 hour week, and then you want to come home and study poker 40 hours a week ?
Jesus, when are you planning on eating, taking a dump, meeting girlies, having fun ? Just don't do it, that's ridiculous. Studying is good, but make it realistic, or you will end up in the nut house.

Totally agree with blazing on this one. I think that it is prob best to study for around 30-45mins b4 u play a session. That way you, in a way, "warm-up" your brain and it gets you thinking properly about what you are trying to work on. The best kind of study is watching vids, talking with ppl who are better/equally skilled players than you(includes having them sweat you), posting on forums and of course 1-1 coaching. But of course you need to take time to just play - poker is supposed to be fun and relaxing (esp if you are a casual player looking to make a few bucks) so don't totally immerse yourself in it too quickly otherwise you will just burn out.
Also, try to not expect massive results too fast. Just enjoy the game and try to play your best whilst learning and the profits will come.

Yeah I know it is a bit extreme so I guess I will slow down. I have long term goals in poker so I will utilize everything I can get my hands on. I know it will take time and effort but yeah I will try not to get burnt in the process, and I will definitely go for coaching and all options that are available.
Thank you so much guys for all your positive feedback, it already feels like home on this forum.
God bless you all...
Peace!

Find out how many hours you can devote to poker, then allot them in a 4:1 ratio of playing:studying.

Yeah watching a couple of videos to get in the zone before you play. If I know I'm playing bad or running bad and im not sure which one is the culprit i'll sometimes just a have a video watching session instead and usually fall asleep..

Another option is to give yourself a realistic schedule for the amount of time you can devote to poker. Now take off 20% and you have your starting guide. From there, break down your time playing/studying ratio (you will find playing should outweigh studying). When you have setup study time, look at what you are going to devote it to eg. working on previous session, working on particular opponent type, endgame etc.. have a reason to study, not just to make up the time.
Working 40hours a week and playing poker is extremely difficult, and i am in a similar position and i can allow 3-4 hours a day max. Dont forget friends and family. Happy to work with you on your game (HH/sweats) when i am back, as i will need to get some sort of study partner to help each other along.
All the best mate.

Thanks buddy I'm just getting things together and starting from scratch with fundamentals and getting some theory in practice. I have a hectic schedule at work but I am willing to devote as much time as I can to poker.
I have collected a lot of videos that I think will help my game.
I am starting out so please understand I won't be that good at first but I will do my very best.
Kudos Bro!

I am gonna interfere here I´d be very pleased to join you guys, I am also willing to do HH reviews, sweat sessions, or w/e and I would appreciate to have a study partner. I wouldn´t say I am a complete beginner since I have some CG experience and therefore I can play somewhat semi-good postflop. Still far from being good though.
Feel free to reject me though .

Feel ya pain bro, I have a 9-5 too & 2 kids. I tend to have a couple hours poker time Tue-Sun (Monday is my day of rest!).
Starting out, I wouldn't rush into committing a ton of hours at the table, build yourself up. Play a few games, figure out the spots you find tough & review them, post them on here. As a rule you should have an 80:20 split playing vs studying.
HH reviews are a good habit to get into. Even if you aren't great, it gets you thinking about different lines & situations & allows strat talk.

I think the more people we have the better it will get. Currently I am watching some videos, and reading articles, there's an overwhelming amount of info so I'll take bite sized chunks.
Thanks again guys!!!
